OLAPLEX - why would I pay over £25 for shampoo? Convince me!

Just that!

Keep reading how it's so wonderful yet I don't know how it can be any better than my usual cheaper shampoo.

I use Aussie but occasionally switch to a Philip Kingsley for itchy scalps (I get a very dry scalp now and then but have a lot of emotional stress going on at the moment and my scalp reacts.)

No idea but my 19 yr old daughter does and her hair is fabulous even though she colors it a lot.

littlestowl · 23/08/2022 07:33

I tried it and it wasn’t very good for my hair - I think it depends on your hair type?

Mine became very straw like and felt quite matted. I know it really works for others though.

I do like Keratese for a more expensive shampoo though - that does make my hair all glossy.

Sunflower987 · 23/08/2022 07:35

I have fine hair prone to breakage and it makes a big difference to my hair.

christmas2022 · 23/08/2022 07:36

I want an expensive shampoo and conditioner now rather than my usual Aldi stuff. I don't want to chance it though just based on the price. I'd need convincing.

JinglingHellsBells · 23/08/2022 07:41

Watching!

My hairdresser uses Keratase for sensitive scalps on me and my hair looks lovely and shiny after a blow dry. But then she also is an expert at drying and she dollops on some nice mouse or whatever before she dries it!

Cant get on with it at all. The oil is nice but my usual kerastase oil is nicer.

Superdrug stock a brand called Revolution who do a range called Plex, which I found quite good on my hair. Four stage process, £10 per product and regular buy one, get one half price deals.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 23/08/2022 08:00

If you have dry itchy scalp use Selsun once a week and keep it on for five mins as it is great. You only need a tiny bit of it as lathers up great. I want to try Olaplex is it no.5/6 meant to be good for flyaway frizzy hair which I never used to get as it used to be soo shiny and lovely but peri menopause and extreme heat has made it weird. Is a lot of money though but have to get it. The best conditioner have used is the one that comes with hair colour I use from Health Shop called Naturint left my hair soo lovely and soft and not so flyaway. No chemicals also and is good to rinse hair with cold water and flattens the cuticle.

Sparkletastic · 23/08/2022 08:09

Another vote for the Revolution dupe range at Superdrug. It's really good on my fine, bleached and coloured hair.

ChillPB · 23/08/2022 08:18

I don’t rate the Olaplex shampoo at all - I think lots of people and underwhelmed by it. The thing that’s worth buying is the treatment (number 3) - if you have damaged hair it’s really good, I alternate it with a moisturising mask and it makes a big difference to my hair.

Captainrachy · 23/08/2022 08:28

I recently bought the shampoo and conditioner and already use to no6 bond smoother. I have to say it has been transformational for my hair. For reference, it’s blonde (dyed) and can be dry/frizzy. The olaplex shampoo has made it look like I’ve come from the hairdressers every time I wash it.

disclaimer - I got it at trade price in salon services as my mum has a card. It was £15.50 for each.

OhMerde · 23/08/2022 09:46

0 and 3 and the oil are great but the shampoo and conditioner are pretty average really.

chillipenguin · 23/08/2022 09:58

Get a trial set of minis. 3 is worth it for me but not any of the others. Smell nice though.

Rina66 · 23/08/2022 10:09

Don't buy the shampoo, just buy a moisturising and repairing budget shampoo. OGX are really good budget products. I do like the Olaplex hair oil though and Kerastase masks - although the OGX mask and oil gets used inbetween to extend the life of expensive products. Coloured, highlighted, frizz prone thick hair here.

I agree with all of the above (and I'd add the 6 too), but I wouldn't buy the shampoo and conditioner again. I tried them as part of a starter set and they were mediocre at best.

I also like the mask (8, I think) Smile

CointreauVersial · 23/08/2022 13:02

I really rate Olaplex 3 (especially if you apply before bedtime and sleep in it) - makes my straw-like post-menopausal hair all soft and silky. It is pricy, but there's always a deal on, and you don't use much.

But I wouldn't bother with the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner - spend your money on the treatment.

AnchorWHAT · 23/08/2022 13:17

Did nothing for my thick frizz prone hair sadly

JinglingHellsBells · 23/08/2022 14:07

Thanks all. I think you have all convinced me to save my money.

I don't have any real issues with my hair, but wondered why Olaplex had such a following.

OP posts:
SocksAndTheCity · 23/08/2022 14:14

Well it has a following because the various treatments (0, 3, 6,7, 8) in the line make a huge difference to a lot of peoples (coloured) hair, but I've never read anything that enthused about the shampoo and conditioner very much?

I use Pureology shampoo and conditioner on mine, if that's helpful 😀

stillstanding51 · 23/08/2022 14:15

I tried it and was disappointed Hair was ok initially but after using for a couple of weeks became very stiff and dry looking. I have very fine hi-lighted hair. Much prefer L’Oréal stuff and their extraordinary oil
I won’t repurchase

Rina66 · 23/08/2022 17:17

I have to say I like the Olaplex mask too, particularly if left on overnight after hi lights, but I don't think the newest product, the serum No 9, is very good either.

ZealAndArdour · 23/08/2022 17:25

I’ve used it, I don’t know that it made that much difference to the condition of my hair, but you can tell it’s a good quality shampoo because you only need a small amount to get a massive luxurious lather.

My hairdresser said the shampoo and conditioner made a different to the condition when we were going through a bleaching process.

ZealAndArdour · 23/08/2022 17:27

If you’re going to buy no 3 make sure you buy it someone that has a high turnover over stock because the old formula contains a chemical linked to infertility.

ZealAndArdour · 23/08/2022 17:27

*buy it somewhere

Robyn188 · 23/08/2022 17:33

I brought some recently, I thought it might be good to treat my hair with something more expensive during the postpartum period; usually I spend very little on my hair products. The first two times I used it, it looked great (I have curly hair and it made the curls bouncier and more defined). But since then it's become incredibly dry, matted and is falling out a lot (probably the hair loss is hormonal, but I think the dryness is the Olaplex). I definitely wouldn't buy again
