I love makeup and wear it daily... & no skincare routine?

I do actually have a skincare routine at the moment but i often wonder if it makes a difference. There are a lot of days when I just skip it and my skin is neither better or worse.

Currently I remove my makeup with a balm cleanser in the shower at night. Then I apply hado labo lotion, facial oil, superdrug serum and then finally weleda skinfood. In the morning, lotion, facial oil, superdrug serum and then biore spf. I have some aha acids for hormonal spots.

I was thinking of just not using skincare except on the rare occasion I feel like my skin 'needs it'. So I will keep a supply of it but not use it daily. I just got a spf primer so my skin would be somewhat protected from uva/uvb rays

What do you all think? I used to faithfully read all the skincare advice online but I guess I am kinda... jaded. I feel like makeup really does make a difference to my appearance but skincare... not really.

I think you need to take makeup off/wash face and wear spf, and moisturise as needed
Everything else is extra

Yes I would still remove makeup with cleanser in the shower and wear SPF. I don't really need moisturizer most days; it only feels dry sometimes...

I think what you're using isn't mainly actives so you probably won't notice much different either
Retinol is the thing that makes a difference mostly for me and cleansing regularly

ouch321 · 22/08/2022 01:13

Wow what a PITA to do that every day.

Remove make up then clean face and dry it, then some kind of cream for the night.

In the AM clean face whilst in shower then moisturise and then make up.

I wouldn't imagine that what you are using at the moment is that effective - several products, but all doing the same thing (lightly moisturizing), all of them quite low in powerful ingredients - so if you stopped, and went with your plan of just removing your make-up in the shower and then moisturizing as you need (plus SPF) your skin would be just the same.
If you are interested in skin-care and want to use multiple layered serums, I would look at Korean/Korean inspired skin-care. Or, if you want to make a real difference (or are concerned about lines, unevenness, dark marks) look to include a powerful product such as a retinol or an acid. Look for brands with high concentrations of powerful ingredients. I LOVE the sabbatical beauty products, which are pricey but extremely effective, so you only use a little.

Isn't this.... a skincare routine? I know you say you don't do it every time but it sounds like you do it a lot?

I have no routine at all so what you do sounds like a lot of work and expense to me!

It is a routine and the products are not very expensive. Superdrug serum is £3.50 and that is after inflation. Facial oil and weleda skinfood were bought in Germany so cheaper than they are here, facial oil was a few euros. Hado labo bought in Asia and it's a very generic drugstore brand there too. Biore SPF is similar.

It take 3 mins excluding washing my face but I find that if it doesn't make a difference, it's still 3 minutes (and money) wasted. Plus I always take all this stuff on holiday so I always have to pay for luggage.

I don't have dark marks, unevennesses or lines. Hence why I guess I just got simple generic products.

@onthefencesitter , well, if you don't have issues to address (dark marks, lines etc.,) then I would get rid of several of the products you are using and see what happens. You could use your existing moisturizer (and perhaps the first lotion, which has a slight acid in it) and see how you find that. The serum and face oil are probably not doing that much extra.
Keep doing this until you want something more, or perhaps until the weather gets really cold and dry, then you might find you need something more.

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/08/2022 08:42

If the skincare routine you're using doesn't work for you then the options are to change it, or stop it, as you say. What you're using sounds mostly like layering moisturising products which isn't likely to generate a long term change in the skin, albeit well hydrated skin always looks healthier.

Better to spend more on a higher strength active or clinical level ingredient targeting what it is you want to achieve. If you're not looking to improve or affect change and are happy with your skin as is then there isn't any need to extend the effort or expense.

I wouldn't give up SPF. It won't change the look of your skin dramatically, it isn't supposed to. It's there to prevent damage that eventually will leave changes to the skin.

I double cleanse, use a serum (for dryness as I struggle with it) a good basic moisturiser and eye cream withput active in and my skin & me daily doser and that's it. Each to their own.

What makes you think that isn't a routine?

TheOGCCL · 22/08/2022 08:49

If you're thinking to downsize, just cleanse and moisturise and add SPF daytime. No need for more than that if you're not seeing a difference. You're lucky :)

I have a routine now but the title meant- is it ok to wear a lot of makeup and given up on a skincare routine.

Honestly, the whole concept that every person needs a skincare 'routine' is just a bit nonsensical. Remember the period of time where everyone was told they absolutely must 'tone'? Then it shifted to serums, and then 'treatments' like acids and so forth...

Everyone's skin is different and some people naturally have amazing skin that will look and age beautifully with soap and water and others will have less beautiful skin regardless of the amount of time and money they put into it. A lot of it is emperor's new clothes stuff imo.

I think the main thing is removing your makeup at night so that your pores aren't clogging with the stuff. If you want to use a simple moisturiser after removing the makeup then I'm sure that'd be plenty.

How old are you, op? It sounds as though your skin is in very good condition. I didn’t do much of anything to my skin apart from cleanse, moisturise, and spf until I got sun spots and forehead wrinkles. Then I started using vit c and matrixyl.
I would take it easy if I were you. How about using a vitamin c cleanser and a hydrating spf during the day and the same cleanser at night with a little of your favoured oil. That’s all.
your skincare can’t give you much of a difference because you don’t need much of a difference.

I am 29.

I came of age during the advent of social media influencers flogging skincare. So I had a convoluted skincare routine at age 22! was living in europe at that time too so had access to cheap skincare products from Dm...

Ha! When I as 29 I had great skin and loved make up, at 39 I had great skin and was less into make up because I had small children, at 49 I still had great skin… honestly, I think you can relax! Lots of people who layer products on later have rosacea and hyper reactive skin. Not worth it! Totally unnecessary.

Farmageddon · 22/08/2022 09:59

OP you don't need all that. If it's stressing you out, just stop. Nobody 'needs' a skincare routine, and I say that as someone who has one. But it is basic, and works for me.
Just try and use an SPF everyday, your future skin will thank you for it!
