How to autumnise my summer wardrobe

I got a bit carried away this summer buying new clothes (partly because I've gone up a size and my body shape has changed post kids so my previous clothes no longer suited me).

I've got the following items:

  • maxi and midi dresses, some tiered
  • pleated maxi skirts
  • oversized midi t-shirt dresses

I naturally go for autumn coloured clothes anyway so have lots of khakhi greens, reds oranges, browns as well as navy which I feel suits my skin tone/ colour, some black. Love an animal print or block colour.

Can I wear these in the autumn?
What jumpers/ layers would you recommend? Cropped? Fitted? Oversized?
What boots/ footwear would work?
What about accessories?

I tend to shop at h&m, new look, hush, fatface, m&s, next, some Boden for essentials, to give you an idea of what my wardrobe might look like

Leggings and long sleeved Ts under t shirt dresses

I wear pretty much all my summer dresses through autumn/winter, but with cardigans/blazers or long sleeved tops underneath, and thick tights and boots. Lots of layering!

What about adding some cropped boxy jumpers or chunky oversized jumpers over long skirts/dresses with ankle boots or trainers?

I usually use google images for ideas, or Pinterest. Some photos that popped up.

So I know what I would do and the oversized t-shirt dresses make me think we have similar tastes… other people will have other ideas

For the dresses and skirts it would be a fine knit loose fitting slouchy jumper ideally with quite an open neckline though to balance it out. Maybe with a French tuck (there is a hack with a belt for dresses)

For the t-shirt dresses I wear mine with an oversized relaxed fit blazer (Sleeves rolled up a little) from Cos and a statement gold chain.

With all of the above I would wear my DM boots.

I also keep an eye out for slouchy cardigans or shackets that can be thrown over a lot of things in a nearly clashing but not quite way. Free people/Anthropology/UO is good for this stuff

Footwear I’d go for trainers (I like new balanc or Stan smiths) or boots (e.g. DMs ).

Over the top I would wear shirts (knotted or worn open), slouchy cardigans chunky or fine and long, boxy/cropped sweaters, or blazers ( oversized, slouchy or cropped).

The choice of knitwear or jacket would depend on the dress/skirt and proportions. For example I’d wear a chunky knit with a slim bias cut dress/skirt but probably
a finer or more fitted knit with pleated or voluminous dress/skirt to balance it out. I am petite and avoid wearing very oversized stuff generally though so if you are taller that might not apply.

Thin but warm thermal vests, long sleeve t-shirt and leggings (Uniqlo are good) are great for autumn/winter. They’re not visible when worn but mean you can wear thin skirts and dresses year-round.

Some lovely ideas here. I love trans/ seasonal dressing - you can be imaginative and mix it up.

Tights and cardigans and boots and Bob's your uncle.

Some really great ideas, feeling very inspired!

I like the idea of wearing a blazer, I have a couple but completely forgot about them until a poster mentioned it! Always struggle know what outer layer to wear with midi/ maxi dresses as I pretty much live in my denim jacket.
Any other outerwear ideas? What about a short trench type jacket?

Hadn't thought about the thickness of knits/ jumpers but I agree that chunky knits go better with a slim fitted type dress, and vice versa.

I'm not a DM kinda person but would definitely wear trainers or boots with dresses. Not sure what boots are in this year but love my tan 1inch boots from Dune from 2 years ago, they are on their way out though :(

Also not sure about leggings under dresses but I'd wear tights, thicker tights for the winter. God idea about the thermals also as I always feel the cold!

What about other accessories like jewellery, scarves, belts.. clueless on this type of stuff! But I get they can make or break an outfit!

For outerwear, as alternatives to blazers I like a long trench or coat, a shacket, or a cropped leather or denim jacket. It depends on the shape of the skirt.

A slouchy knit French-tucked into a skirt with a belt can look nice, I like Other Stories, Mango and Sezane for belts.
