Took DD's ear piercing out and she can't get new one in...help!

My DD's ear lobe piercing was done 6 weeks ago. All has seemed to heal well.

We took out the original gold stud today. She planned to replace with another precious metal stud - sterilised of course.

She can get the new stud about 9/10 of the way through the hole, but it hurts too much to push right through. It seems to be "bulging" through the skin rather than coming right through easily (TMI sorry!)

Any advice welcome please and thank you.

Probably a bit early to change them. How long was the earring left out?

dementedpixie · 20/08/2022 17:50

Can you see the opening at the back? Is she aiming for it correctly?

Ihatethenewlook · 20/08/2022 17:51

You need to wiggle it about to find the opening. It can’t have instantly closed

Beamur · 20/08/2022 17:51

Can you try putting the earring in from the back instead?
This happened to my DD and unfortunately she ended up needing the ear repiercing. It had healed up.

Sirzy · 20/08/2022 17:52

I would try to put the earring in from the back through to open it but then go back to the original and leave it a few more weeks.

bellac11 · 20/08/2022 17:52

It wont have closed in a day, you just need to wiggle it around until it comes out the other side

It will hurt.

Unorthofox · 20/08/2022 17:52

Put some Vaseline on the stem of the earring to lube it up. Then gently wiggle and twist.

dementedpixie · 20/08/2022 17:54

Do you have ice or a small ice pack you can numb the back of her ear with so it's less sore before trying again?

daisyjgrey · 20/08/2022 17:54

It's completely impossible for it to have healed over in less than a day, unless she's Wolverine. The trajectory you're using to put the new jewellery in is probably off from the trajectory of the hole. This is completely possible, especially if it was done with one of those infernal plastic gun things they use at Claire's Accessories.

It'll take a wiggle but the other side of the piercing is there somewhere.

As an aside - unless the new jewellery is still in an untouched and in autoclave after a fresh cycle, it isn't sterile any more.

figmaofmyimagination · 20/08/2022 17:54

Put it in backwards, then switch it around. It’s either not quite straight or it’s not completely healed… mind you mine still does this, 30 years in!!

VerifiedBot2351 · 20/08/2022 17:56

It’s just because you’re not hitting the hole at the back. Wiggle it about to find the hole at the back.

waltzingparrot · 20/08/2022 17:56

You've just got the angle wrong. You could always numb the ear with an ice cube to help but you need to gently pushing it at different angles. I always find it easier to push it in as far as it would go and then hold the front of the earring with your second finger and put your thumb behind the ear and as you push at different angles you can eventually feel the sharp metal and guide it through.

Another thing to try is feeding it through from back of ear to front just to reassure yourself the hole is there.

DorritLittle · 20/08/2022 17:58

You need an ice cube. Happened to my DD and that was what worked/was least stressful.

Theillustratedmummy · 20/08/2022 18:29

Yes as others have said its because the hole is not straight all the way through. Just wiggle it round while looking at the back.
Also if the stem or whatever its called is slightly thicker than the one she was pierced with it might take a push.

PumpkinDart · 21/08/2022 00:15

Try putting the original earring back through then change it straight after. I found this worked with my daughter's (hers were needle pierced holes and titanium studs).
