When and where to start with makeup for teens?

Hi all, my dd (14), has recently asked me if she could get makeup. I don't know much about it as I don't use it often.
I don't know what is too much for her, or what or even if she should use it at this age. What did you do with your teens? And what products were the 'starting off point's for you?

All help appreciated,
Thanks

I'd just give her some money and let her go to Superdrug with her mates to buy her own.

I started mine on Body Shop as I knew it was unlikely to cause allergies. We went together and chose eyeshadow, ascara, lip
gloss and a liner.
later on she added powder

As above, or go in with her and get some advice from the beauty counter women. I would start with a tinted moisturiser, mascara, blusher and lip gloss, but also a cleanser, face wash and something like baby oil to take the mascara off with, if she is going to use make up then she needs to learn to be scrupulous in taking it all off at night. If she wants eye colours then there are lots of inexpensive palettes around to experiment with, get her looking at tutorials on you tube for advice in applying it well, oh and don't forget some nice brushes too.

I'd let her lead. She probably knows more about it than you do.

I second the Body Shop and / or a trip to Boots or Superdrug. At her age makeup should be about having fun. If she is just dipping a toe in, she should go for mascara (even clear mascara if she has dark lashes), blusher and lip gloss, maybe some fun eyeshadow colours. Superdrug has some great cheap and cheerful palettes aimed at teens.

I would steer her away from any kind of skin makeup unless she needs it to cover acne or something. My biggest faux pas at her age was plastering orange Rimmel pressed powder over what I now realise was flawless young skin... such a shame!

If she does have acne she wants to cover up just help her find a concealer and setting powder the right colour. But yes, the fun stuff, eyeshadow palette, blush, lipstick and a mascara and she might want brow stuff so again help find the right colour because too dark can very easily look far too much.

Mascara
Lip gloss/tinted lip balm.
Brow gel
Eye pencil

If she's fair with light hair/brows, then go with brown mascara.

If you have no interest in make up then she should just go and buy whatever she wants, you don't need to make suggestions if you don't know anything about it. She'll probably only buy cheaper items if she's using her own pocket money, so no great loss if she makes a mistake and buys something that's not right.

Boots Natural Collection is my favourite. I think everything is under £2.50? I let my dd choose a selection of things then she “played” with it at home, then upgraded to other brands once she knew what was what.

Or Primark makeup is also good. Although the range can be hit and miss.

If she's been watching YT for ideas then she probably has a list of products that she'd like to try eg brushes, beauty blenders, concealer, powder, mascara etc

IggyAce · 17/08/2022 08:49

Revolution, MUA (Superdrug) and Primark have some good starter pieces.
Recommend the eyeshadow pallets from Revolution or MUA. I live Primark mascara and 3 in 1 brow pencil.
My dd is 15 and after experimenting with the above has moved onto brands popular with her peers these are Morphe and benefit.
