What footwear for Italian city sightseeing!

I go to Italy next week and I'm having a panic about suitable footwear. We're doing Milan, Florence, and Rome so we'll be walking a lot and travelling a lot. We've booked several tours and will be standing for long periods.

I already struggle with my feet and would prefer to wear something with good support but what will look fashionable without being too hot!?

Skechers sandals have good support and are breathable

White supergas - they go with almost anything, are super comfy, can be dressed up or down (also a favourite of the Duchess of C!)

I would say the same. And I have never had to wear them in, they have been comfortable from day 1.

Chemenger · 16/08/2022 08:37

Sketchers white trainers. Probably hopelessly “frumpy” in the eyes of the S&B crowd but your feet will love you.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2022 08:41

Not Converse - too flat
Not walking boots - would boil and look silly in a city

New Balance trainers are really comfortable from first wear.

I found some great recommendations on here, Mw19 :

Something you can get your hands (feet!) on now and walk miles to wear them in. Wearing brand new shoes of any type would be bonkers.
I'd go for a combination of Birkenstocks and Adidas Superstars. But my feet are used to both.

Merrels are good for time on your feet, and Sketchers may be too. Converse would be madness if you have PF.

I'd be tempted to give your hiking shoes a good clean and go with them for most od the walking (unless they're proper boots, which might be overkill).

Pinkywoo · 16/08/2022 08:48

Archies flipflops, they're perfect for this.

Yes to this.

Pugdogmom · 16/08/2022 08:56

No, people DON'T care what you are wearing on your feet in Milan. Not everyone is dressed like they stepped off the covers of Vogue. Most people dress normally.

YesThisIsMe · 16/08/2022 09:02

Fitflop Rally trainers and Teva Hurricane sandals (the Universals aren't nearly as good IMO).

MsTSwift · 16/08/2022 09:04

Gorgeous snakeskin black and gold Birkenstocks supremely comfy look good with everything. Cannot bear socks and trainers in the heat ewww

Cocobeau · 16/08/2022 09:10

I also have PF and the Supegras I had absolutely made it worse. They are solid and too flat - I wished I had realised sooner how much more pain they were causing so would avoid. I wore a pair of Ted Baker white trainers on my last city break to Italy which had a surprising amount of bounce and heel comfort for a flat fashion shoe, but I would suggest what others have said and pay no attention to what they look like, just focus on comfort. You will soon realise most tourists are wearing sports trainers for comfort so you won't look odd.

eggandonion · 16/08/2022 09:10

Get the white version of your black sketchers.

blodynmawr55 · 16/08/2022 09:14

I third fitflop rally trainers.
Various colours and materials.
Last years.
Comfiest footwear ever.

LadyEloise1 · 16/08/2022 09:19

You'll need shoes with arch support.
Fit Flop trainers or Skechers arch fit ( but my podiatrist rubbished them Sad)
Clarks Cloudsteppers - I have an old pair and they were so comfortable.
Try Hotter too if there's a shop nearby.
When you see some of the ugly shoes worn by fashionistas, who cares.

TheFeistyFeminist · 16/08/2022 09:27

Comfort is your most important factor of course, but bear in mind that if you're in an outfit that marks you out as a tourist you're more at risk from pickpockets etc.

If you can find leather sandals that you can walk all day in, like someone mentioned Saltwaters, you'd blend in better with the locals, than if you were in hiking-style trainers.

Italy is fabulous, enjoy the trip. See as much as you can but you won't see everything, your neck would have to be on a swivel. Plan to return!

YellowandGreya · 16/08/2022 09:52

A physio recommend getting measured and assed by a running shop.Got Asic running shoe. Game changer, got knee injuries. Can walk comfortably for Kms. Was in southern Italy this year, street style more casual there, lots of jeans and tshirts, but tourists dress for comfort.Once you are coordinated and ironed, of course for Italian aesthetic!

I have same problem and just been walking round European city in my Birkenstocks, wide buckle. If was bit cooler I would have worn my new Nike airs

Ohh, can I please ask if they are comfortable? Which ones did you get?

Hoppinggreen · 16/08/2022 10:48

I have black sketchers sandals.
They go with everything and are very very comfy

SirVixofVixHall · 16/08/2022 10:50

Fit flop trainers are incredibly comfortable, I walked ten miles in mine when brand new, no blisters. I haven’t tried their sandals but friend finds them v comfortable too, she has issues with foot pain.

Calafragilistic · 16/08/2022 11:05

I find Allbirds are fantastic and have no breaking in time. I'd get the tree ones rather than wool for summer but both are super comfy

Royalicing123 · 16/08/2022 11:06

Light mesh Go Walk sketchers- so comfortable.

I lived in my olive green Teva sandals on holiday recently. They're very cushioned underneath and airy since they're sandals, plus I like having the ankle strap for added security if I needed to cross the road quickly or something. Probably my most comfortable footwear, alongside my white Nike Internationalist trainers which are also pretty lightweight.

I have the Original Universal style, says they have arch support but I guess it depends on how much you need: www.teva-eu.com/en/gb/womens-original-universal-retro-sandal/1003987.html?dwvar_1003987_color=BLK
