Anyone around with knowledge of antique jewellery?

OldFashionedWoman · 15/08/2022 18:52

My late mom had millions of jewellery, all was left to me.

she mostly liked costume large jewellery, but there's quite a bit of more delicate jewellery that I like.

I'm not sure on the ring in the attached photo. It's a teeny but large for my tastes, but the style intrigues me - I'd like to know if it has a name.

Any help gratefully received. Flowers

Does it have a hallmark?

OldFashionedWoman · 15/08/2022 19:13

Yes it's hallmarked but can't read it 😭

Beautiful ring! It looks like an art deco flip over day & night ring

Antarcticant · 15/08/2022 19:18

Hmm. Hopefully someone knowledgeable will be along soon. I'd say it's an Art Deco ring, but I couldn't put a name to it. It's very lovely - perfect evening wear.

x-post with said knowledgeable person!

Flip over day and night ring! Thank you so much.

I'd got Opera ring in my head, but kinda knew I wasn't correct.

I'll get one of those magnificent glasses and investigate the hallmarks.

New hobby incoming, perhaps

Thanks all.

You could take the jewellery to a decent auction house to get it valued?

Look for one that does specialist jewellery auctions. (I used Sworders in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex)

Make an appointment first so the right person is available.

They will (roughly) describe each piece and give an idea of the price you might expect to get if auctioned.

Sadly this is usually much much lower than the retail price or any insurance valuations.

However, even amongst the costume jewellery as well as the real, there maybe some unexpected items. Fun to find out, and no need to actually sell any of it unless you want to.

If you go to a jeweller to get an idea about the pieces you may not get totally true values.

An auction house will make money if they sell your pieces for more so it is in their interest to give you genuine valuations .

Auctions are often online now so you get a worldwide audience for your pieces. Especially if they are by named makers.
