How much does your beauty regime cost ?

I was calculating this for another thread and I realized the breakdown for me on an annual basis is:

  1. £510 for skincare and makeup (including holiday spending when I raid overseas drugstores for cheaper products though I also use YSL /suqqu foundation, chanel highlighter, charlotte tilbury and nars blush.
  2. £120 for haircuts and box hairdye and Loreal conditioner (started doing a cut and dye in 2020 for £100 every 6 months but soon switched to box hair dye at £15 per box and yearly haircuts)
  3. £150 for contact lenses
So in total £890 per year...I don't go for any beauty treatments, remove my upper lip/brow hairs with a trimmer from amazon. I share razors, deodorant, shampoo and shower gel with DH and he buys them in bulk (so they are not expensive, i think).

It would be interesting to see what other women spend on! Based on our general household spending, DH and I are average in the country so it would be interesting to see if I am the same for my beauty spending (which is my main 'vanity' expense as I am not really interested in clothes or shoes).

I spend a lot but it's less than a third of my salary and makes me happy

DillDanding · 15/08/2022 14:34

I worked out about £3500 pa (1 month's salary). Not too bad, I think I am low maintenance compared to my friends.

MarthaMayWhovier · 15/08/2022 14:44

Never counted it up. It varies. I used to spend a lot on perfume but I went full PFB and didn't wear perfume or use scented shower gel/soap for 2 years so I saved some money there.

This year I've probably spent about;

  • £40 on perfume samples and about
  • £60 on makeup.

I haven't had my hair cut in about 6 years and I'm not bothered about skin care. I also didn't bother shaving my legs for about 2 years.

Wow what do your friends do? my DH thinks I am very high maintenance because I cannot fit all my makeup and skincare into 2 airport approved tiny plastic bags. We also have to pay for check in luggage. That is not factored in my budget!

But while I use premium makeup, i actually find i spend a similar amount compared to when I used budget brands. I find I buy less. I take my makeup everywhere and cheap makeup tends to break really easily so I was constantly buying replacements. My charlotte tilbury mini contour kit has lasted over a year and is still going strong. My Suqqu foundation lasted over half a year with daily usage.

How are you calculating your make up/skincare spend?

How are you calculating your make up/skincare spend?

I look at my credit card spending on my app for the past year- anything that is Boots/Superdrug/Space NK/Lookfantastic/London Heathrow etc etc Of course if its a 0.99 transaction in Boots, its probably for a chocolate bar and not makeup so I discount that. Equally a few of the transactions that I have included may be for something banal like panadol and plasters but that wouldn't be significant

All my spending is on my credit card which I pay off every month. I also look at my overseas bank account and I roughly remember how much I spent at DM (german drugstore).

Probably about £100 a year including the £40 I estimated for hair on the other thread. I occasionally buy skincare brands like the ordinary but mostly stick to trusty E45/Aveeno (I have eczema on my face).

Ws2210 · 15/08/2022 16:09

I have a lot of guilt about spending roughly 1000 a year on botox. But I cut my own hair, dye my own eyebrows and lashes (10 quid for a bottle which lasts forever) spend about 10 pounds a year buying a new mascara. Use bepanthen as lip balm. Don't shave. Tretinoin from oversees pharmacy is only around 30 pounds a year. I spend too much on suncream but see that as more of a health care product.

I'm thinking about getting lip blushing/lip tattooing as lipsticks dry my lips out and never stay on, has anyone had it?

I’ve just done the Maths for the first time ever. Eek.

Per year:

Hair £400 (3 x £100 hair cut including Olaplex. Long straight hair doesn’t need cutting more than that. Box dye at home.)

Make-up £250 (budget brand other than Nars concealer & foundation and Laura Mercier setting powder).

Skincare £200 (very low maintenance - Avene cleanser, CeraVe mousturiser, Vichy sunscreen).

Pedicures in the summer £200
Do my own nails - equipment maybe £40

= £1,090

Seems quite low maintenance compared to others, but I’d like to reduce that by about half ideally. I’d have to find dupes for my make up brands and get a cheaper hairdresser, but not sure if that’s realistic.

I also have a perfume habit that I’m trying to rein in…

But get most of my clothes secondhand.
I think I’m doing OK.

ChickPizz · 15/08/2022 16:15

No I’ve mistyped! Skincare isn’t £200, it’s about £100! So that’s under a grand a year, which feels better Grin

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 15/08/2022 17:38

Hair - I cut and highlight my own and sometimes add colour (pink etc). Less than £100 a year maybe including shampoo conditioner etc.
Nails - same only Barry M nail polish I’ve worn for years - £6 a year!
Makeup - around £100 a year. I buy a lot of ELF.
Fake tan - probably about £50 a year.
Fun extras (eyeshadow, new nail polish for Christmas) and fails (rubbish new hair oil, crap fake tan or the likes), or something else that tempted me probably about £100 a year.

badbaduncle · 15/08/2022 18:25

Annually:
Hair £1500
Waxing £160
Make up £0
Skincare approx £120 but I bought a lot of 'bargains' in lock down so nothing for 18months
Lasering for acne discolouration £150

But v low clothing costs and I don't use a handbag so none there
Yeah, I justify my hair costs in this way 🤷‍♀️

prescribingmum · 15/08/2022 18:36

£250-300 on skincare
£100 on threading
£30 on wax and strips (do my own at home)
£200 on hair cuts and keratin treatments
£100 on nails (get them done before special occasion or holiday otherwise I don't bother)
£20 max on make up (don't wear on daily basis so only ever buy eye make up when expires)
Misc £100 for shampoo, soap, suncreams etc

Hoping to have laser hair removal soon which will bump up cost in short term but then can stop waxing

merryhouse · 15/08/2022 19:21

Haircut two or three times a year (shortish to very short) - £150
cleanser and moisturiser from supermarket - goodness knows. £10?
shower gel, shampoo, body lotion from supermarket - ditto. £10?
deodorant - still using up a stick, no idea what I spend. less than £5?
sunscreen - have stayed in a lot instead recently. again, less than £5?
nail varnish - when I get round to it, on my toes, using up stuff from years ago
make-up - about 3 times a year, so haven't actually bought any for a while
hair removal - use an electric shaver. batteries per year ??? say £1
scent - no idea, I get people to buy it as presents - I have cheap tastes, say £20
fake tan, hair colour, injections, facials, manicures - don't use them
glasses - unfortunately need expensive ones with a new prescription every couple of years, so - about £300

Total £500 a year

Passmeaplacard · 15/08/2022 19:46

I honestly wouldn’t even want to fully tally it up
however off the top of my head
£10 a month contact lenses
£100 hair every 3 - 4 months
£25 skin+me monthly
£8 eyebrows every 4 weeks
£30 nails maybe 5 times over the year
£50 professional makeup a couple of times a year for weddings etc

but that’s before I get onto all the normal stuff shampoo, moisturiser etc and I usually get 1-2 beauty advent calendars.
I figure I haven’t started paying for Botox etc yet and I don’t generally spend loads on clothes
