Is cashmere always warm?

Sorry if stupid question

my mum is 83 and feels the cold muchly, so in winter she wears many many layers. She wants a nice cardi for when we go out and sis and I thought we'd treat her to cashmere for her birthday.

how warm is it though? And if it's a blend with another fabric, will it still be warm?

thanks.

Cashmere keeps you warm for its weight. However a cashmere cardigan will often be quite fine, and whilst that can look elegant, a thin cashmere layer won’t be as warm as a thick woolly number!

For warmth you should seek a higher gauge and ply number: www.jetandbo.com/blogs/all-about-cashmere/cashmere-ply-and-gauge-explained

Cotton-cashmere isn’t warm. All the price-tag, none of the warmth. Silk-cashmere is warm.

as well as cashmere, munrospun wool and merino are also excellent without the cashmere price.

Have a look at Nearly New Cashmere, lovely excellent quality jumpers and cardigans. I find cashmere lovely and cosy for its weight and much easier to wear than a thick jumper.

Silk-cashmere is warm? Ooh, we can get her something more elegant.

I am a tad over invested as she hasn't been interested in clothes since dad died, hence now she is suddenly looking at things, we thought it would make a good birthday gift.

she has two weddings to attend in October and once it gets below 20, she is freezing!

I feel the cold and have bought a lot of cashmere over the years, starting in M&S/John Lewis and, when that didn't seem to make as much of a difference as I'd expected, going for higher price points at places like Brora and one Scottish label (whose name I can't remember). Still not as much of a difference as my thermal base layers make!
So if you're thinking about keeping your mum warm this winter, you need to go more hard core than cashmere in my opinion. If she wants something elegant for a wedding, then a cashmere cardi will help.

Check out house of bruar - it’s a Scottish company (with a huge shop) which specialises in mail-order for well-to-do pensioners - so it tends to be stylish, classical designs.

yes, silk is very warm! Silk scarf and a cashmere jumper and I’m toasty!
