I’m due to get some new glasses but it’s been so long since I looked I have lost touch with what looks good.

I am old(63) have short blonde (grey!) hair. I dont want to become glasses/pixie cut/dangly earrings elderly woman cliche.

Are heavy square frames worn with bright lipstick still current? Or rounder oversized metal or plastic frames?

I don’t know where to start, would welcome some help please.

Specsavers have an online thing where you take a photo of yourself and then you can choose glasses which it superimposes on your photo. It gives a good idea of what styles will suit you. Even if you don't go to them in the end it's a starting point for you.

Glasses direct let you order tester glasses (I think 4 at a time) with no lenses to be sent to your house for free to try on for look. It really helped me to choose. I've gone for some massive circular lenses that really suit me but I never would've thought they would.

It has less to do with trends and more about what sorts your agape of face and colouring. I always know when I find the right pair - I am comfortable with them. My optician helps too suggesting styles that will support my complex prescription.

Our independent optician has someone on the staff who is trained in helping people choose the right glasses for their face. My DH couldn’t care less about such things but they sorted him out

Thanks for all the suggestions- I think a good try on session is needed, either virtual or irl.

I love this place iolla.com/showrooms if it's near to you at all?

Whether you want plastic or metal depends on the size and shape of your nose. I went against opticians advice and got plastic frames. I'm now spending an inordinate amount of time pushing my glasses up my , everyone comments on, small nose. My new glasses are gold metal and eau de nil with nose pads

I think metal oversized round may be trending, but like a pp I have a complex prescription and a bugger of an astigmatism that means the shape of lenses I can wear without getting headaches is quite limited.

I tried some metal oversized round earlier this year and had to return them. My lenses didn't look that good in them anyway, as the astigmatism correction makes them quite thick on one side.

I'm back to the large, rectangle plastic frames style that I've worn for the past ten or so years. They still seem to be very fashionable as the opticians are full of them. They suit my face shape too, though I have a longish face that can take several styles.

It's better to go with frames that suit you than worry about fashion when it comes to glasses. What you can do is change the colours of the frames. There are some really interesting colourful tortoiseshells around at the moment, as well as hybrid metal and plastic frames that look nice (which I could never wear, sadly).

Thanks everyone for suggestions. I have booked an optician appointment and will have a try on next week.
very sensible advice to just go with what suits me. I have a huge nose @GettingStuffed so larger frames shouldn’t be a problem!!
