My Steampod has died. Do I replace or try something new?

I have long, very thick, naturally wavy colour treated hair that is prone to frizz. After years of using GHD's my hairdresser persuaded me to get a L'Oréal steampod 3.0 and I loved it. Quicker, less damage etc. But just over a year after purchase (so just out of warranty..typical!!) my steampod has completely stopped steaming. As much as I've loved the steampod and raved about it to people (and swore I'd never go back to GHD's) I'm reluctant to shell out another £200+ for something that breaks after only a year of use! Does anyone know if the newer model is more reliable? Or should I try something new? I've heard good things about Cloud 9, but open to any recommendations.

I tend to use my steampod to smooth and create a loose wave in my hair rather than going for the poker straight look so need something that can create the same effect.

Hit me with your best hair gadget recommendations please!

I think that you have been unlucky. Admittedly, the online retailer agreed to replace my first steampod after two months as the cord was fraying. But since then it has lasted three years. My daughter has the newer one which is less unwieldy and it is also a couple of years old too. Can you buy another one from a supplier with a decent guarantee or directly from the manufacturer? I’m afraid that I have never found anything as good.

Do you empty the water pod religiously after use? Use filtered water for the pod? You do need to look after it. I live in soft water area so don’t need to worry too much but when I take it on holiday I use bottled or filter water in the pod.

Yep. I've taken such good care of them, that's why it's so frustrating that they've broken so soon.

That’s really annoying for you. Hope someone can recommend/ has experience of Cloud9 or equivalent. Maybe worth speaking to manufacturer to ask for advice/ see if they will offer even a ‘paid for’ repair?

I've had the Steampod 3 for three years. It's way better than GHDs and T3 straightners. I'd definitely repurchase.

Is there a newer model? I thought the Steampod 3 was the latest?

You're right, I thought there was but looking at the loreal website the 3.0 is the latest.

Is it worth getting in touch with the manufacturer direct to see if you can buy a discounted one.

Also I thought the legal length of warranty for electrical goods was 2 years?

It says one year on my order confirmation and on the website. I have tried to call them and they don't open til Monday so will call then..no harm in trying!

I was referring to the uk consumer goods act "fit for purpose"

RandomMess · 13/08/2022 17:52

Sale of Goods Act

At £300 is reasonable to expect it to work for more than 12 months and I think your contract is with the retailer

@RandomMess that's helpful, thank you.
