Getting moisture into bleached hair

LadyOfTheCanyon · 09/08/2022 11:06

I have my hair bleached every three months or so because -grey. I tried going grey during Lockdown and it did absolutely nothing for me. I have a LOT of grey and blonde just works best with my colouring. I am about a level 7-8.

No matter how many moisturising shampoos/ conditioners/ masks I use I can't get my hair to look particularly sleek and shiny. I know that with bleached hair it's an uphill battle but I'd like some tips as to what products people are using ( especially on the ends - they are in good condition because of regular trims, but I always end up using Frizz Ease or Argan oil or some kind of cream to keep them under control. PK Elasticizer works well but I can't afford to use it as regularly as I'd need to.

My hairdresser uses Olaplex when I go but the very next wash I'm back to where I started and I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. I don't rub my hair when I wash it, I pat dry and blow dry gently. I only wash twice a week, three Max as my hair is dry so I don't think I'm stripping it

Please throw me some recommendations for hair gunk that will make me swishy!

TIA Grin

There’s a NZ company called sansceuticals which make a moisture spray, a ph corrector spray and a deep moisturising conditioner which will definitely give you glossy hair. Not cheap but really good.

Bought the three quid Schwartzkopf oil spray, it's amazing! Beats my expensive ones. Thanks mumsnet!

Which one is that please?

I like the Loreal purple intensive mask

I tried the bleach London mask (and the milkshake leave in conditioner) based on mumsnet recommendations, but they were both meh.

OP: If you are grey, you are presumably near/post menopause and it may be that your hair has gone coarse and dry as a result of this, as well as the bleach, so maybe an unavoidable aspect of getting older.

Washing your hair shouldn't really make it dry, and it's good for your hair follicles to keep them clean and stimulated, so you could wash more often, especially in this hot sweaty weather, even if it's just a co-wash.

Not using heat protection is foolish. I agree with PP suggestions of leaving your hair to dry naturally more often.

...I also notice a lot of posters recommending protein treatments. If your hair does not need protein and you overload it with protein, this will be counterproductive.

I find Joico products quite good for moisture.

Do you know about the Curly Girl method? You don't have to have curly hair to take the approach and adapt bits to suit. One of the main things is co-washing instead of using shampoo - there are variations to this but for simplicity, it means using a fair amount of silicone-free conditioner to lubricate and then using fingers to scrub the scalp to remove dirt rather than a shampoo which often works by stripping - dirt, oils, moisture, colour... You would need to commit to it for a few weeks at least, and really put your back into the scrubbing and then rinse til it feels clean - I've seen people complaining their hair isn't clean but it's often down to applying conditioner the same way they did shampoo and then wondering why it's not magically lifting the dirt!

I do have wavy hair, but even if I didn't I'd still be doing co-washing because it has restored (or rather stopped stripping) so much moisture to my hair, and the frizz has consequently calmed down a lot. You get through a LOT of conditioner, but there are some very cheap ones (£1 or so) that are suitable, e.g. www.savers.co.uk/XHC/XHC-Banana-Conditioner-400ml/

I think this approach might be worth trying as it addresses the cause (shampoo stripping moisture) rather than trying twenty different expensive masks and oils to add moisture back in. And if it doesn't work, just go back to the hunt for a good product!

I thought the same, the bleach lifts up your hair cuticles which is what happens with curly hair so you need to do things to keep the moisture in or in high humidity moisture out.

I would say watch some curly hair videos.

I use the LOC method www.hairstory.com/blog/loc-method-what-is-it-does-it-work/
To hold the moisture in you apply a Leave in, Oil then a hair cream/gel or mousse.

To dry your hair hair put it in a microfiber towel or old t shirt this protects the cuticles to get most of the water out then whilst it's still damp add hair products and if you can let it air dry.

Look at Silver Kat on Instagram, the lady is a hairdresser & is totally grey naturally. Her hair is amazing & she recommends the best products & how to use them.

Yip the milkshake leave in condish is pretty underwhelming results wise, and smells like toffee.

Agree with co-washing (washing with just conditioner) my hair isn't greasy but it's a big dry lion's mane most of the time. I really recommend Garnier hair food (I like the brown lid one) it's only about £3.50, you can use it as a conditioner, a leave in conditioner and a conditioning treatment. I use it as conditioner, only half wash it out and ALSO put in as a leave in conditioner. Makes my hair feel normal!

It's linked further up thread. Schwartzkopf dry oil spray. I liked it so much I've also bought the styling oil! Three quid each currently in Boots.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/08/2022 12:27

Just popping back on to say thanks all! Lots to have a look at/ try. I had points on my Superdrug card so bought the dry oil spray mentioned by a PP and it's pretty good!
I've also got a sachet of reincarnation mask somewhere so when I have time to leave it in for a half hour or so, I will.
