Kibbe body types

I came across this in another thread and having lost some weight and feeling like I want to refresh my wardrobe and replace with less but more key, classic pieces with a colour palette that matches. I was intrigued by Kibbe and I read up a little on it and took the test.

I'm no clearer than when I started and seem to have an equal amount of C's and D's which the results don't mention, so I'm none the wiser.

Does anyone follow this? Is it a real thing or am I making this more complicated than it needs to be?

I see it in a similar way to seasonal colour analysis - I don’t follow it slavishly but I read a few articles and found it useful in helping me identify and focus on what shapes work for me. It mostly just confirmed choices I was already making instinctively but understanding why was helpful. I fit quite easily into a category though, not sure how it works if you’re ambiguous.

hobbledyhoy · 08/08/2022 22:14

Thanks, not sure either. I didn't know whether it was a thing everyone knew and I've just discovered. Just felt needed a bit of a style refresh!

I swear by it - it has confirmed rules that I knew worked for me but couldn't put my finger on why - e.g long skirts have to have a slit, I can't wear crew necks, I suit clothes that drape and elongate me, I don't suit buttoned shirts or cropped tops.

I'm a soft dramatic - instantly knew by looking at the photos and then confirmed by the quiz.

astorsback · 09/08/2022 18:40

Its tricky if you're not familiar with the nuance and able to correctly identify markers.

So are you a Classic and a gamine?

LeeMiller · 09/08/2022 18:47

OP can you work it out based on looking at some of the suggested the outfits or celebrities for each category? Or get a friend to do the quiz for you.
If you have a mix of answers perhaps you’re borderline and might benefit from elements of both categories that you fit into anyway, it’s not an exact science.

hobbledyhoy · 09/08/2022 20:50

Yeah I find it quite hard to clearly see what I am I think. I think I'm a classic and it seems to be the type of clothes that I would instinctively pick or feel good in.
I'm maybe just looking in the wrong place for the info. I think it was concept wardrobe website I looked at.

astorsback · 10/08/2022 21:27

Sounds like you're a soft Classic, so classic but with a Yin side. So you may choose to go for classic clothes but express your yin softness in your shoes (round toes), jewellery (soft round delicate shapes) or other accessories - even hair (soft waves).

I'm quite envious. Im a Natural and its quite difficult to do natural without looking plain, scruffy or old fashioned after a certain age.

There's a YouTuber called AllyArt (I think) who's brilliant at explaining the types in great detail.

@astorsback
Thank you so much! That's so helpful, I'll have a look at the video.
I find the general Kibbe idea quite interesting and I do think there's something about knowing how to dress to suit your body shape properly and the confidence it brings when you know something suits you.

OP posts:
Littleguggi · 10/08/2022 22:39

Is there a particular quiz people would recommend?

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/08/2022 23:21

I came across the kibbe recently and suddenly it all made more sense, I've always tried to dress for my body shape but was struggling sometimes now I've gained weight since children I get away with less or I think I do.

So it helped me to find the styles or shapes that suit me again.

I'm a soft dramatic and all the advice fits, it's also the make up advice. Whilst I don't actually wear that much day to day I have noticed that I can wear quiet strong make up say smokey eyes and lipstick and it doesn't look wrong well to me it doesn't whereas I know on some people it's doesn't seem to sit them and they suit much more suitable make up.

hobbledyhoy · 11/08/2022 07:46

It's very interesting. Where do you find the advice about the type of clothes, makeup, hairstyle @Sickoffamilydrama is this Aly Art? I watched that video below last night but see she has lots

It was a while back so found more than this at the time but this shows you a good comparisons.

There are reddit subs where you can post a photo with your face obscured or cropped off and they can advise you. sometimes it's hard to judge ourselves accurately.

hobbledyhoy · 11/08/2022 11:55

@Sickoffamilydrama thank you that's hugely helpful. I actually think I might be a soft dramatic as I'm just under 5'10" and apparently there are only 3 types you fall into if 5'9" or above and I would identify with a lot of the characteristics mentioned. I thought I was perhaps classic after taking the test but according to other sources, too tall apparently.

@MrPakora that might be an idea, very hard to objectively look at ourselves.

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 11/08/2022 11:57

Just saw the title of this thread and was amused because the only kibbe I know is an Arabic food shaped like a rugby ball 😂

hobbledyhoy · 11/08/2022 12:00

@IScreamAtMichaelangelos haha 😂 at a certain angle I could look like that

Might just label it my own type!

hobbledyhoy · 11/08/2022 12:50

@PeloAddict

Yeah over the last 48hrs think I've been a classic, flamboyant natural and a soft dramatic. 😂 You'd think it would be clear to your own eyes what you look like but appears not.

OP posts:
HerArtMaterials · 11/08/2022 13:39

I used to be into this but somehow became bored with it over time. It's fascinating for a while though. To be honest, even though it's fun to work out, it is rather limiting, and can repress creativity.
I think I was a gamine or classic, posted photo's to reddit, etc, but came away no wiser really. A lot of the suggestions are for really old fashioned styles or stereotypical silhouettes that don't seem to have a place in the contemporary world. I doubt any of the advice would include hanging out in joggers Grin

I have a youthful look that doesn't seem to suit clothes aimed at my age group. This doesn't mean I look young, just youthful. Sadly Kibbe seemed to suggest I ought to crop all of my hair off and pretend to be Jean Seberg, or alternatively I could wear my hair in a bouffant, purchase a cigarette holder, shove on a slinky shift dress for 'Breakfast at Tiffanies'.
Not so great for a spot of local shopping.

I suppose if you are truly stuck and not sure what styles you like, it could offer you an entry ticket, familiarising yourself with lines, lengths, neck styles, etc. Still, it seems like a system to play with rather than take seriously. In reality, as I have got older, I feel best and look more authentic in clothes that would be suggested for a Natural. And I am not remotely in that category. It's all a bit odd.

hobbledyhoy · 11/08/2022 18:00

@HerArtMaterials
Yeah it's not so much to limit really but more of trying to see whether it throws up things that I wouldn't have considered before. Suppose due to having a baby, getting closer to 40, I wanted to refresh things a bit. I often find I buy things I really like the look of but then never wear because I think it doesn't suit or I'm buying for occasions/weather I don't have.

Yes some of the advice is rather dated and doesn't take into account the way we live now really. Your description sounds fabulous Grin but yeah it's not really a nipping out to Tesco or Teams call outfit

OP posts:
LeeMiller · 11/08/2022 22:28

I think ultimately, a system that splits all women of every age/shape/ethnicity/weight etc into a small number of categories can only be ever be a very blunt tool. But it’s more nuanced than the pears/apples/hourglass system and I think looking at your body in a different way - vertical or horizontal lines, softness versus angular features and so on - can be quite enlightening, whereas the actual outfit suggestions are a bit dated and limiting.

lugeforlife · 12/08/2022 08:40

I looked into it ages ago as I have a fairly tricky figure to dress so looking for some help. I can't remember what I came out as (natural classic- is that one?). It did match what I like style wise but didn't help me dress my short waisted with a tummy shape but then nothing does.....

If you're 5'10" & built like a power lifter youre a Natural - possibly a flamboyant natural. They are the broad, sturdy, powerful types.

PeloAddict · 12/08/2022 11:47

@astorsback thank you! I'll have a look. I'm soft as in hourglass shape but sturdy if that makes sense

In that case, you could be a soft natural as they are curvier. Interestingly, David Kibbe said, if he had to guess what Kim Kardashian was, he'd go for Natural, as she has sturdy bones, broad shoulders and curves but the surgery confuses things. I think it helps to be 'typed' by someone with an eye for these things.
