Perfume vs age

I know everyone’s skin is different when it comes to interacting with perfume, but is there a general rule about which perfumes smell good on older vs younger skin?

When we take perfume recommendations, should we always consider the age of the person recommending it?

This came about because I went to the Dior counter asking to try Diorissimo after hearing a rave review. The lady at the counter said no, that scent is too old for me. I tried it anyway and agreed it wasn’t nice on my skin. She said that it only smells good on older skin and I should try Miss Dior instead.

Now I’m inclined to ignore perfume recommendations unless they come from someone in my age bracket! Is this a thing?

I have never heard of this. Perfumes smell different on each person because of chemistry, it has nothing to do with age as far as I know. Perhaps she meant that it is more appropriate for an older woman as it's a vintage perfume and not a very "modern" smell (if that makes any sense).
Don't forget that she probably has targets to work towards or has to sell x number of bottles of x perfume so her advice might have been also influenced by that.

I think age shouldn't matter when it comes to perfume as it's a very personal choice. Just wear what you love and smells good on you :)

I wore Opium when I was younger because it smelt of my grandmother. Lots of people told me I was too young for it.
I still wear it now but no comments now I'm older!

One thing that I’ve found (I’m early 60s) is that my taste in change has changed massively since the menopause. Up to my mid-50s I loved more spicy, woody, leathery scents and often bought the mens version of perfumes . I never liked anything fruity or floral or at all sweet and now am drawn to these. I honestly think you should wear scents that make you happy and that make you want to keep smelling your wrists. We are told that some scents are ‘young’ but truly I’d go with what you’re drawn to.

Excuse the typos. My taste in scent has changed I meant to say .

Ok. What you guys say make sense - tastes change with age, but probably not body chemistry in any generalisable way. It just confused me how adamantly she was pushing me away from Diorissimo and towards Miss Dior.

I’m totally for wearing whatever I love! My top favourite is Chanel No 5 despite the granny connotations, I just think it smells amazing.

Well you should 100% keep wearing your No.5 and if you liked how Diorissimo smelled on you, get a bottle and enjoy.
