Is this normal hair shedding? Pic attached

Hi,

Long story short, I've lost a lot of hair over the past decade thanks to iron deficiency, not actually brought to my attention by my GP and classed as within "normal range". Not sure how a deficiency can be seen as normal, but anyway.....

Really upped my iron intake and have recently added a heme based supplement and my nails are growing super fast! I think my day to day shedding is a bit less, but when I wash I still lose bloody loads! I used to just let it go down the drain, because I couldn't bear to see it, but now I'm catching it all so I can see if it's actually improving.

So below is the amount I lost today. It's fairly standard. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

Is this a normal amount of hair shedding in the shower?.....

@itsnotmeitsu how long did it take for the Starpowa gummies to start working? I feel like I’m going through a period of hair shedding and would love to find a supplement that will help. I’ve been trying to boost my iron intake but it doesn’t seem to be having an effect yet (I’d say about a month in). Been upping it via diet and also taking a special hair supplement.

op I lose about as much as that I think when I brush, esp after washing. If I count the strands it varies between 20 and 50. But if I brush then wash then the combined loss is more like 80 and then there’ll be hairs that fall out during the day too.
My hair seems to go in funny cycles where every now and then it sheds a lot and it seems to go wavier and drier. I don’t really know what triggers it but it does stress me out - which prob doesn’t help!

@YouSetTheTone > It's a couple of years ago, but as far as I remember they worked really quickly. Of course, that may have been because I was coming out of the grief that affected me physically - I'll never know - but I've used the Starpowa gummies ever since.

I lose more and my hair is long and thick but if it looks thin to you judge it by that rather than the hairbrush.

Earlier this year, for the first time ever, I was losing hair by the handful. I only had to run my hand through my hair to harvest a handful. Much worse when shampooing.

I had covid at Christmas, and I wondered if there was a connection. I'm often iron deficient, I think. But, as suddenly as it started, it stopped. Hope I'm not going to start moulting every year.

I was just going to say the same thing, I've had covid twice very mild but mega hair loss after, my hairdresser said a lot of women mentioned it as well

Thank you @itsnotmeitsu, I’ve decided to order some! Does anyone know if it’s ok to take two types of supplement or if I should stop one while trying another?

I have been wondering about a covid connection too actually. I had it very mildly in January so it would mean there was a delay of a few months between the covid and the shedding though. Hoping it just stops all of a sudden soon!

I have about the same hair loss, I'm always iron deficient because of running a lot, but also noticed that following my 2 Covid infections the hair loss was worse (it's normal after viral infections apparently): It took 6 months for my hair loss to recduce after the first infection, I'm now 4 months after the second so hopefully it will reduce soon: I've started taking a collagen supplement in the hope that will help with hair growth too: Being 56 and menopausal doesn't help either!

I've been losing lots more than that with each wash but it's only the last six weeks or so. I'm 42. Genuinely, do you think we're moulting in the heat 😀

YouSetTheTone · 17/08/2022 14:13

@keeprunningupthathill I think I am actually! Feels like I’m a cat shedding fur 🙀

itsnotmeitsu · 17/08/2022 22:39

@YouSetTheTone > I also take a vitamin D supplement alongside the Starpowa supplement. I can't say whether these supplements make a great difference because I don't know how things would be if I wasn't taking them. But I feel happy enough with them both that I won't be stopping them anytime soon.
