How to look more 'glam' in the summer?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 06/08/2022 10:32

It often strikes me when we're on holiday that some people manage to look effortlessly glam even when it's hot & we're sightseeing (rather than dressing up for dinner).

I've been trying to capture what it is about them that makes me think 'glam' - in the hope that I might replicate (appreciate it won't be 'effortless'!)

I've come up with;
Sunglasses (which I only wear when reading in bright sunshine)
Decent bags (not the ancient rucksack I drag with me)
Jewellery (beyond the one pair or earrings and gold chain i normally have with me)
Jackets (although when it's really hot I'd rather be cool).

Any other thoughts?

💪 sister!

BadlydoneHelen · 09/08/2022 16:23

I'm nearly 60 and am wearing denim shorts today: I look fucking fantastic

MintJulia · 09/08/2022 16:31

Regular pedicure, nicely moisturised feet, no dead yellow skin, no hairy toes. Nicely moisturised and exfoliated legs.

😁

I am so sorry, I can't apologise enough. I have obviously confused what I thought a Hottentot was (notoriously over dressed Georgian dandies a la Beau Brummel).

I don't know where you are from but when I was growing up in Scotland that word was used as an example of someone who was over and gaudily dressed. I can't say that I have heard it though in years.

beachcitygirl · 09/08/2022 18:11

I'm a long haul air hostess & been so for 30 years. Seen it all. My go to "hot weather " clothes are
Tan sandals
Cream linen wrap dress
Cream linen longish shorts
A couple of Bardot tops one black & one white
Black stretchy split skirt for evening
Slim gold bangles & gold long chain & gold hoops
Same jewellery but in silver
Good quality (but years old) miu miu tan eather bag
Straw hat
Gold sunglasses
Black sunglasses
Black swimsuit
White swimsuit
Black sarong
White sarong

Some cheaper (accessorise) chunky earrings

Red lipstick matte
Good setting spray (urban decay)

Always always always take straighteners or heated rollers away with.

No, I'm not Scottish but a couple of friends at university were. That must be where I heard it?

Aren't there any glamorous sandals that aren't tan?

I refuse to buy anything in tan because it doesn't go with any of my jewel winter coloured clothes.

Saltwater sandals in lots of colours

RampantIvy · 09/08/2022 18:53

I'm not keen on Saltwater sandals. I currently have a pair of navy Rieker wedge sandals and some light blue flat Rieker sandals.

Gold sandals would work well.

If you're going to bare your feet then for the love of God sort them out.

woodhill · 09/08/2022 19:51

Depends what fits your feet and is comfortable

quirkychick · 12/08/2022 18:04

@RampantIvy as a cool-toned, pale person, I wear leather sandals in black/grey/navy or metallic silver/pewter, I often use silver/pewter nail polish on my toes as it's pretty neutral. I generally wear silver jewellery, so bangles, leather wrap bracelet, statement ring, either necklace or earrings.

I think I'm less likely to look a hot mess if I wear natural fibres like cotton or linen. I also do either the legs or arms out, as it protects my skin and gives it a rest. I often have some kind of cover up, maybe a shirt if necessary and always sunglasses and a sunhat. I covert the shade and try to be most active in the morning or evening when it's cooler, if possible.

RampantIvy · 12/08/2022 21:52

@quirkychick I had some black sandals for about 8 years that finally bit the dust. My current flat sandals are pale blue, and they go with all of my summer clothes. I would love some pewter coloured sandals but haven't found any.

To be honest we don't often have sufficient good weather to justify me owning several pairs of sandals. My other pair are navy blue wedges which I struggle to wear these days thanks to osteoarthritis Sad

JaceLancs · 12/08/2022 21:59

I waft in linen quite well
doesn’t even have to be expensive my favourite white linen sleeveless shirt dress was in H and M sale for under £15 about 4 years ago - I’ve just bought a beige sleeved version from same for £17
they must be linen mix because if you shove on a coat hanger straight from washing machine they don’t even need ironing 😊😊

RampantIvy · 12/08/2022 23:16

I googled pewter sandals and found some Hotter ones I liked the look of, but there weren't any in my size. Sadly the nearest Hotter shop has closed and because I have such awkward feet I have to try footwear on before I buy it. I usually end up trying on about 20 pairs of shoes before I find something comfortable.

quirkychick · 13/08/2022 10:11

@RampantIvy I wear lots of blue in spring and summer too. I'm with you on the difficult feet (high instep, history of plantar fasciitis and ankle injury). I do walk loads, so have several pairs of sandals that I've bought over the last 4 or 5 years. I have just got rid of a pair of pewter sandals that are style over substance, look great, look comfortable but actually shred my feet.

Coming back to the op, I think if you are sightseeing in the heat you want to mix function with style. I have just been looking at the Coastal Grandmother trend (odd name), but essentially breezy, summer basics dressed up well. I have quite an active lifestyle with dcs, so need functional clothes all year round. Cotton or linen basics can be made to look better with straw hat, sunglasses, leather sandals, crossbody bag and jewellery.

Also, on the subject of hair, I have curly hair and in hot, humid weather it goes up and I use glycerine free gel to help combat the frizz. Keeps it under some control and is cooler.

woodhill · 13/08/2022 11:35

Never saw those in a narrow fitting originally

I have some of their other styles in narrow and they are good

KarlWrenbury · 13/08/2022 15:16

I am sure these shoes are great for you guys, but I would not say that hotter shoes are the epitome of glam 🥴

I think Hotter do have some less "old lady" styled shoes as well these days.

bigbeautifulmonster · 13/08/2022 15:50

Tailoring

woodhill · 13/08/2022 15:52

Hotter shoes are not glam but they support my feet and do narrow fittings😀
