Have you culled your corporate clothes if wfh?

I've got a rail full of expensive dresses and separates mocking me, 90% of them will never be worn again.
I dodon'know whether to bother trying to sell some of them....where do you even sell second hand clothes these days? Or give them to charity. Or keep them in the hope they won't be too small a horribly dated if I ever return to working outside of the home?
What have you done with yours if in the same position?

I have put them in the loft. And I feel bad about that. Because I cannot see any way I will ever need them or need all of them. So I am hoping I will find the energy to sell (or donate to smart works)

karmakameleon · 01/08/2022 19:10

Most of mine have been put away but every now and then I wear an old favourite. Makes me feel overdressed but I invariably get compliments on my dress when I do.

JennyForeigner · 01/08/2022 19:21

Yes, I was just thinking today how strange it now seems to have worn all those uncomfortable little pencil dresses!

I see giving to charity as one of the easy ways to contribute so never allow myself to feel guilty about something that has been passed on. It's very freeing to be able not to feel guilty about the occasional mistaken purchase or the faff of reselling a second hand buy that isn't right.

That said I have my first London social in three years next week - and no idea what to wear, especially on my feet!

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 01/08/2022 19:23

Our office has gone all casual since The Big Return. Smart dresses are so yesterday!

DSGR · 01/08/2022 19:33

I’ve kept a few classic black dresses but the rest have gone to charity. They are a sunk cost - let somebody else enjoy them

Schooldil3ma · 01/08/2022 19:48

You are all right, it's a sunk cost. I'll donate them and hope a young woman at the start of her career gets a bargain and feels amazing in them.
I really don't miss the desperation to undo my zip and properly breath when leaving work, but I do miss how polished and professional I felt wearing nice tailored clothes to work.

I’ve kept quite a lot, it’s amazing how smart the office gets when we have big meetings/events so I’ve retained some favourites.

I’ve also found that tailored trousers and blouses continue to work well with flats/trainers rather than heels so again a lots still working .

thw test I gave to a charity which specilaises in providing interview wear for low income women looking to return to work

I didn't have smart clothes that were too tight in the first place. I don't like casual clothes. I'm back full time in the office and I wear my smart clothes. I couldn't care less that the majority of people are in scruffy casual clothes.

Triffid1 · 01/08/2022 21:28

I gave away a lot a few years ago. But did keep a couple of particularly nice ones for special events. Also, take the time to look at each item individually- can it be styled differently for a different purpose? I have a couple of dresses that with a fun belt and a cardigan work well still for more casual work meetings. And I realised quite a few blouses or tops could actually work well with jeans or whatever.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/08/2022 22:40

I'm back in the office and it's way more casual, I was always a dress and heels type before, but I couldn't imagine it now.

I've kept a few dresses that would work for dinners, events etc. and have been able to dress down some separates a little, but everything else has gone. I've kept my heels 'just in case' but I can't imagine wearing them again!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/08/2022 22:41

Yup. I'm barely in a bra these days. In my defence I have one meeting a week.

lissie123 · 01/08/2022 22:46

Well I’ve been wfh for the last two years and now have a new job which requires me being in the office one day a week. What am I supposed to wear? My trackie bottoms might not cut it…

LaWench · 01/08/2022 22:48

I can't fit into my work clothes 😩. I'm still holding onto them hoping that I will be able to fit into them and may end up working in an office again one day.

Leftbutcameback · 01/08/2022 22:55

If you are giving them to charity worth seeing if you have a local one which helps women getting (back) into work. Our local one is brilliant and I love seeing the outfits they put together for interviews.

DelurkingAJ · 01/08/2022 22:58

I’ve kept them as some of the companies in my industry do still do smart office wear and who knows where I might be working in five years time.

echt · 02/08/2022 01:00

On retirement I culled my teaching wardrobe and sent it to charity. I kept the better pieces for my volunteer work which is strictly no denim or athletic/athletic-style wear.

One other thing was the Covid weight gain, and I kept some very nice work dresses, thinking I would wear them when/if I lost weight. I did, quite a lot, and find I can't be doing them, so off they go.

Christinatheastonishing · 02/08/2022 01:28

I kept most jackets, blouses and pants, and some of the skirts that can be repurposed as 'smart casual' when mixed up with other things.

I've kept a black dress (for funerals!) and one other tailored dress as a just-in-case because I love it so much.

All the bottoms and dresses are a size too small post-covid. I've given myself this year to get back into them or they're going.

Everything else was sold on eBay, if a desirable brand, or donated.

Christinatheastonishing · 02/08/2022 02:06

Oh and my heels, office and otherwise, have been drastically thinned out and the precious ones are in a box in the garage!

Blackdiame · 02/08/2022 10:45

I sold/donated almost all of it when I started a wfh job in 2018 but I kept hold of a smart blazer and a skirt just in case. But I've not worn either of these since then. I still keep hold of them in case I need to attend an in person interview or client meeting.
