Has anyone successfully “cured” oily skin?

It drives me mad! I’ve never found anything I can do about it but it makes me feel gross.

Any product recommendations? I am basically clueless about everything.

My very basic routine is
Cetaphil oily skin cleanser morning and night
Cerave spf moisturiser morning
Epiduo pm

Because my skin is bad I usually have to wear make up which is usually just bare minerals and a matte powder - Mabelline I think. I’ve not found a primer that makes any difference or doesn’t result in worse skin.

My skin is very sensitive and acne prone and I have tried products in the past that have made it flare but the acne is mostly controlled by the epiduo now (and the combined pill, much to my annoyance). I am in my early 30s if relevant!

Any and all help much appreciated!

Both my teens had oily, acne prone skin and after much trial and error we solved the problem with THe Ordinary Niacinamide and zinc serum after cleansing (used a cerave or cetaphil cleanser).

Followed with this moisturiser which is brilliant, I use it too, very light texture and really excellent for spot prone skin. You should be able to get it from Boots.

We also found this cream brilliant for clearing up acne scars

Hope this helps

Have you tried oil cleansing?

I have oily skin and it is much better when I cleanse at night with oil - I like Superfacialist Vitamin C oil - and use an oil as a moisturiser. I used to use Neal's Yard rose oil but it's pricey - The Ordinary Squalane seems to do a similar job without the lovely scent.

(The theory is that if you strip your skin of oils, it'll go into oil production overdrive to compensate.)

Discovereads · 30/07/2022 00:28

Cetaphil has SLS in it which is a very harsh detergent to use on the face. You’re then adding the Epiduo which has benozyl peroxide in it…also very drying. And no moisturiser at night at all! So your pores are going into overdrive in the night, and then you wash your face again in the morning because it’s all oily, am I right?

Id advise:

Tea tree oil cleanser by Dr Organic in pm followed by
Epiduo followed by
Dr Organic skin clear oil control moisturiser

go to bed

In morning, do not wash your face. If you must, just splash water on it
apply bare minerals make up

repeat. Once skin is calm, just use Epiduo as a spot treatment as needed as opposed to every day.

I’m afraid my only advice is to have a baby. My oily skin was completely the reverse during pregnancy!

It was the only time in my life I didn’t have to wash my oily hair every day, too. (Sadly it went right back to normal afterwards.)

It might be a tad extreme as a solution, but it shows that most of it is hormonal and you can’t do a massive amount about it, really. 😂

TheOGCCL · 30/07/2022 09:25

The short answer is no. My skin is still really oily in my mid forties.

I do agree it’s counter productive to use products for oily skin, I have better luck treating my skin as if it’s dry and sensitive (neither of which I thought it was for years). Bare Minerals powder foundation is good as works with the natural oils.

Can also recommend Dermatica, they will add niacinamide into your formula.

AnnaMagnani · 30/07/2022 09:34

I got older so my hormones changed.

But previously when I was in a mad skincare phase, yes by using Retin-A. However as your skin is totally new every 6 weeks as it renews itself, it's never 'cured' as you have to keep doing the routine forever.

If you are really wanting to do something serious I would do Skin+Me or Dermatica.

FourEyesGood · 30/07/2022 09:36

Using facial oil has really helped, weirdly. I use cheapo Superdrug Vitamin E face oil (usually about £3.50 and almost always on a ‘buy one get one half price’ deal) morning and evening, and my skin is now much less oily (except immediately after I apply the oil, obv). I’m 43, if that’s relevant.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 30/07/2022 09:37

Also when you are older your skin will look younger. People with dry skin tend to get much worse wrinkles than those who have oily skin. Your time will come!

maddy68 · 30/07/2022 09:39

Mine is hormone based. Being on the pill /hrt stopped it

maddy68 · 30/07/2022 09:40

And yes. You'll be grateful when you're older. I'm in my mid 50s and I honestly don't look it.

Same
It was like I'd finally reached puberty
No oily skin , no spots, didn't have to wash hair every day, didn't sweat as much ....

Jack2507 · 30/07/2022 09:55

I struggled with acne and oily skin throughout my twenties. I finally got it under control by simplifying my skin care massively. I only use micellar water (oil be gone by simple, although I think they might be discontinuing it as it's hard to find) and then from time to time a serum not a heavy cream. If I have an acne flare up then la Roche posay efaclar duo is amazing.

I also agree about pp in regards to pregnancy! First time I ever got dry skin on my forehead!

AtmyWitsEnd1234 · 30/07/2022 10:03

You want to see a beauty therapist that specialises in facial skin care.

I use the cerave cleanser once in the morning, then the face cream, and double cleanse at night then the face cream. I noticed a difference almost immediately. I've since been having red a white led skin treatments and face peels which has really helped. I wouldn't look back now.

AnotherVice · 30/07/2022 10:09

Maybe look at your diet too. My skin is noticeably more oily when I have fatty foods like crisps etc....

KipG · 30/07/2022 10:30

My skin was prob combo rather than truly oily, but tretinoin has made it much less so. In fact, the dermatica prescription made it incredibly dry, but I now use skin + me, which suits me better. I'm using it primarily for anti-ageing reasons but retinol also has proven efficacy against acne, so would think it's worth a try. Needing to slather on rich moisturiser is quite a novelty after a lifetime of dodging anything greasy!

Miajk · 30/07/2022 10:33

If you can afford to, see a dermatologist.

If not, Dr. Dray has a huge amount of videos on all skin types (she's a US dermatologist).

Some things to try:

  • don't wash face at all in the AM or try with just water
  • SPF only in the morning instead of moisturizer
  • double cleanse at night (oil based cleanser like simple hydrating one & regular cleanser after)

Avoid fragrance and harsh surfactants where possible.

I have combination skin and not doing anything in the morning apart from SPF has helped the oily parts lots.

Whatthejackdawsaw · 30/07/2022 10:35

Contraceptive pill fixed mine, tried all sorts of products and regimes prior to that

ParasiticMicrowasp · 30/07/2022 10:36

I did a total overhaul of my skincare about six years ago and it's been a lot less oily since - I never have to touch up my makeup anymore unless I've sweated it off in the heat, for example. I went from using a Johnson's face wash in the morning and No. 7 green cleanser and toner at night (think it was for oily skin but can't remember) with no moisturiser at all to using a cleansing balm in the morning followed by day cream and using micellar water and a cream cleanser for dry skin at night, with a glycolic acid exfoliator twice a week and a good, rich night cream. When I buy new products, I tend to go for things aimed at dry and sensitive skin. My skin isn't hugely sensitive, but when it's set off, I use Ultrabland exclusively for cleansing. It's truly one of the best cleansers I've ever used.

For makeup, though, I tend to head for long wear/oily skin stuff. ELDW is my favourite foundation because it just. stays. where. I. put it. It's so reliable. My eyelids still get oily, so I use a Wet n Wild eye primer to make sure that my eyeliner doesn't slide down my face. And I use All Nighter setting spray a lot of the time, as well.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 30/07/2022 10:38

Estée Lauder the mattifyer is good

hassletassle · 30/07/2022 18:30

Going on a high oestrogen pill like Yasmin.

Coffeepot72 · 30/07/2022 19:29

I’m in my early 50s and the oiliness has only just started to subside, sorry if that’s not what you want to hear! I don’t have any wrinkles though

minipie · 30/07/2022 19:34

Dianette. Came off it for a while recently and omg the oiliness! I had forgotten.

Don’t know what I’ll do when I’m too old for it.

Fairyliz · 30/07/2022 19:42

Yes get old!
I had terribly oily skin from my teens to my 50's. Now I am in my 60's I have the best skin I've had since I was 11. Okay a few fine lines but clear and glowy.

ScoobyDoNot · 30/07/2022 19:43

I have very oily skin.
The only things I use on my face now are bioré charcoal cleanser, Revlon mattifying primer & Revlon colourstay foundation for combination/oily skin.

No more greasy/shiny skin!
