Philips Luke’s - coarse dark hair - does it work?

Hi everyone, I have PCOS so have the joy of very coarse dark hair. I’ve bought the Lumea finally and hoping to improve my legs and bikini area to start with.

I have pale skin and dark hair which I know is good for it, but does it work on very coarse/thick dark hair?

thanks!

Title is supposed to say Lumea not Luke’s 😩🙄

I haven’t used it myself and heard its meant to be good and effective on pale skin and dark hair. But my pain threshold is not good! I was going to invest in one let me know the outcome (I have pale skin and also dark course hair - but it’s finer on my arms and legs)

I used it last night and it hurt a bit - I think it’s because my legs had gone a bit stubbly since doing the test which didn’t hurt. Apparently if any hair is coming through it’s more painful as it gets the top of your skin more, so next time I’ll make sure it’s freshly shaved!

I have quite hairy arms but not going to bother there as you have to shave everything first and I just can’t be bothered with that on my arms 😬

it’s a bit time consuming tbh but I will persevere to see if I get results! I’m sure it gets easier with time as hairs hopefully stop growing x

It has worked for me, I am/was very hirsute, very pale skin and jet black hair. I haven't really had to use my Lumea very often to see amazing results. When I got it initially I used it weekly just to zap any hairs that were coming up between waxes and this year I zapped my legs with it at the beginning of summer. I do have a bit of regrowth but it's very quickly removed with the epilator, and it's sporadic. I can't use the lumea at the moment because my legs are tanned, but `I will use it again probably in October. For me it's been amazing and I wish that I'd been able to buy one 30 years ago

Gosh the arms sound more time consuming than I previously thought! Think I may bleach them since the hair is very fine and minimal. Don’t want it growing back after shaving !! Well done for going through the pain.

MomsJeans · 26/07/2022 08:54

Hey that sounds great. You can’t use the Lumea when tanned? I’ve been gifted an epilator but too scared to use. I heard the pain is excruciating! 😵‍💫

It has worked brilliantly on my armpits, pretty good on my legs, probably least best on my bikini line. But in all areas there is definitely reduced growth. My armpits though, the hair hardly grows at all there now.

I can see how well it has worked on my legs: you aren't supposed to use it over freckles or moles - I have a large freckle on my leg that now has a distinct little ring of hair growing around it Grin before, that hair would have blended in with the rest of my leg hairs!

I have dark, coarse hair and bought a lumea a couple of years ago. Best thing I ever bought! Have barely any hair on my lower legs now and what is there is much fairer and finer. Same with bikini line. I would never have gone out with my legs out before using it and it is honestly so freeing not having to worry about stubble/shaving rash!
I do top up sessions every now and again just to ensure it doesn't creep back but it's also saved a fortune on shaving and waxing.

Winederlust · 26/07/2022 09:01

I also wouldn't say it was too time consuming either tbh. I would do different body parts on different days so you're not sat there too long, but it doesn't take up anymore time than a wax would imo.
It also shouldn't hurt. It maybe gets a bit warm after a while but not painful!

ThickCutSteakChips · 26/07/2022 09:06

The only thing I find it it doesn't work on my knees! I think it's because, for some reason, the hair on my knees is lighter, and also no matter how much I exfoliate, I have dark patches on my knees. So that is not a good combo for the lumea!

Cafeaulait27 · 26/07/2022 09:15

When I did a test patch on number 5 there was no pain at all, but the next night there was pain so I had to go down to 3. apparently it’s because my leg hair had started to come back through after shaving!

glad to hear that many of you had good results!

I also have PCOS and have had a Lumea for a few years. It does work well but I found I needed to use it longer in the initial phase (I think they recommend you do it initially once every fortnight for 4-6 times and then move to maintain once a month or so, I basically did it every fortnight for 8-10 times). I had professional laser done on my facial hair and that also required double the normal time range and more frequent maintenance top ups than someone without PCOS so I took that as a guide.

I think it works best on dark coarse hairs, it's worked everywhere pretty well except armpits for me but I suspect that has to do with the hollowing of mine and how well I'm able to place the machine.
