I'm 40 and I can't wear make up, I just can't put it on without looking like a clown. All I wear is bb cream and lip gloss but I'm getting older now and I can't get away with the fresh face look. I'm going to a wedding and I'm trying some eye make up but it just looks shit. I wore eyeliner for my wedding and it looked great but when I try and put it on it goes everywhere. Is a pencil better, pen?? I have dark hair, green eyes so what colour eyeshadow should I wear? All the tutorials I watch use so many different colours and brushes I'm confused!!
I currently own zero make up except loreal bb cream and lip gloss so any recommendations would be good too

Watch this video (link below) then buy what you don't yet have. Rimmel is a very good brand if you don't want to spend much money.

Do what this woman tells you to do and don't do what she tells you not to do. Leave yourself at least 30-40 minutes to follow her advice and make sure you have some decent make-up brushes.

On the few occasions I bother to do exactly what she says, I get people saying 'Wow, you look gorgeous!' Usually I get no comments at all on my looks. She is the make up queen.

Have you watched some of the make up artists on instagram/fv Bryony Blake ffrejya etc they are really good. I’m 43 so feel heavy eye make up is ageing me however I use brown eye liner and using tiny strokes onto my lash line from outside in is much easier than trying to do one line. Benefit do a nice brown and it’s less harsh for me than the black. I go for fresh dewy makeup and add more for a night out but generally try less is more to start with then you can build up, use natural light where you can too. Just watch tutorials of artists that you like the look of, perhaps similar age and practise.
moisturise your skin well so foundation sits better, I’ve found since doing that makeup has looked better

you will get there, just trial and error

It could be the products you are applying! It's also super important to use a really good skin care routine to prep your face.

Do you use a primer? I recommend this (Elf product) makes my make-up go on so smooth

For foundation, I think bear minerals is a fantastic option if you are new to it! The solid block one is sooooo easy to apply

Also you want a bit of bronzer on top! I use an NYX one.

But 100% start with a good skin routine

Why don’t you go to Boots or a department store and ask one of the make up counter assistants to show you what to wear and how to apply it? I would suggest No7 simply because it’s not too expensive.

With an eyelash lift and tint, eyebrows waxed/tinted can really make you look more polished without needing makeup.
Bronzer and lip gloss will add more glam.

@goldfinchonthelawn is right, that tutorial is great!

Also agree about going to a makeup counter. Go at a quiet time in the week if you can, not a Saturday as the shops will be busy or a Sunday as it’ll be skeleton staff.

I’ve had a couple of great times in SpaceNK recently - they do a number of brands so can mix to suit you, and they have some great skincare brands to choose from. Your base (moisturiser, serum etc) is as important as a good foundation. My local one are good at not pressuring you to buy anything. They happily do my whole face and write down a shopping list for me to spread out over the next few months!

For eyeshadow, I sometimes pick up a cheap colour or two from a supermarket just to see how a colour looks on me. Once you find a shade you like, you could get a better quality version or a pallette to play with. How about trying purple/lilac with your green eyes for a playful/striking wedding guest look? Or peach for a more subtle look.

Eyes are tricky I think - it took me ages to work out from watching tutorials that I have hooded eyes which is why I find eyeliner/shadow so difficult! Perhaps you do too - you could have a search of some YouTube tutorials for hooded eyes and see what you think.
