Skintelligent - skincare myths debunked?

Just heard about this book on the outspoken beauty podcast - they interviewed the author, Dr Natalia Spierings. Here’s the Amazon link for reference: www.amazon.co.uk/Skintelligent-What-really-need-great/dp/1785044060/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Basically she’s saying that (apart from tretinoin) there’s no benefit to the actives we look for in skincare e.g. collagen (she goes into a rant about this) and vitamin C. Neither penetrate the skin so it’s all marketing hype. There are temporary benefits to some things e.g. acids for exfoliating. But generally the “studies” done by skincare companies are low level marketing studies and we shouldn’t trust their claims.

Has anyone heard of her and what do you think? On the interview she came across as an experienced and genuine medical professional. I’m also medical (not derm) and what she says sounds really sensible, I want to believe it. She doesn’t do paid endorsements on social media. She has a clinic in the NHS and a private one in Dubai.

So what do you think about stripping things back? I’m thinking just cleanse, tret at night, cheap moisturiser, and spf in the daytime?

I looked a couple of Dr Dray videos but she looked like she was in the grip of an eating disorder and I found it uncomfortable viewing.

I find her quite irritating, I think it's her voice or something just grates on me, sounds quite whiny and nasal.

But yes, her eating is problematic, veering into disordered eating territory. Although I wouldn't take nutrition tips from a dermatologist anyway, but she has a lot of followers.

She looks bloody poorly most of the time, usually derms glow with health.

AFAIK she eats a very strict vegan diet. Abbey Sharp (a dietician) did a critique of one of her 'what I eat in a day' videos and it was ridiculous. Mostly just some coffee, green leaves and a few nuts. I don't know how she has the energy for anything.

Even if she does have an eating disorder, it doesn't negate the common sense she talks and the good free advice she gives from her years of experience. She's very much about doing the best for your skin without the need of spending a fortune.

I refuse to put Vaseline on my face. It smells awful and I would wake up with pimples all over my cheeks from blocked pores.

I have very sensitive skin and have never dared to use retinol/Tretinoin. I use glycolic acid to reduce/clear up blackheads and blocked pores and it works.
I don’t expect my skin care to make me look younger or reduce wrinkles. I use it for dryness and to stop pimples.

I agree that there’s an awful lot of bullshit regarding skincare. But we don’t all have the same skin; and I would love to hear what women with oily skin think of slapping on some Vaseline at night.

She was on Lorraine program this morning.

I've had to give up skin and me, because my hands peeled so much. My face was fine, my hands were not!

Any ideas, except getting someone else to put it on for me? Grin

You can get a mini self tan face mitt, it's like a tiny body one. I got one in Superdrug. It's just big enough to put two fingers in.

picklemewalnuts · 20/07/2022 19:58

Can't say I did, @PeloAddict. It didn't occur to me, as it's safe on my face.

I'll restart, and wash my hands post creams!

And if that doesn't work, I'll try @JimmiChoux's idea!

I worked with her once. She is a no-nonsense, straight-talking anti-bullshitter. A complete powerhouse of energy and ambition - very passionate about what she does and dedicated to giving good advice. I trust her and will definitely look into refining my routine and saving my cash!

She did come across that way in the interview! I want to believe her. It actually feels like a relief not having to figure out the perfect regime for my skin, getting all the actives in without clashing… I’ll stick to the tret and spf, plus/minus any other thing that I happen to enjoy using.

It's called slugging. People put actives on their skin and seal it all in with vaseline which is supposed to be noncomedogenic. There are lots of YouTube videos about.
I love vaseline. I would never do this in a million years! I can hear pimples popping up just thinking about it. 😂

TheWrongAllmanBrother · 20/07/2022 23:26

I could never slather Vaseline all over my face I have to admit. By far the best moisturiser I’ve used is the Nivea sensitive one on a blue pot with almond oil, or the sensitive night cream in the white tube with grape seed oil. I use it over actives eg Dermatica and that’s it. It’s a moisturiser, it doesn’t have to be fancy to do the job.
