Older woman's tummy blues

PiggySue · 15/07/2022 09:00

Ok, most of the time I luckily have the older woman's lack of fucks to give about the way my body looks and what I choose to wear. I'm in a uniform for my work and I don't do a lot of the kind of socialising that requires dressing up. I'm quite happy pottering around the garden in cut offs and a vest.
Things that work are-men's jeans which are looser cut. More flowing tops to skim The Blob and yes, the current favourite tiered, maxi, floral dresses.

However I am finding that a lot of my clothes just are not flattering or even comfortable sometimes with The Blob. Skirts in particular are problematic. They either ride up over The Blob or sit tightly around it, emphasising it.
Trousers that fit my skinny legs are tight around the midriff.
Elastic waists climb to my under bust if allowed to.
I can look pregnant in dresses. Anything fitted is a no no. Loose fabric kind of catches on the shelf of Blob. Fitted waists ride up or cut in.
I'm loathe to give up a lot of my wardrobe and don't have a lot of spare cash to buy different stuff but maybe I need to change my style?
I've got a DD's graduation to attend next week and am stressing.
Any advice and what type of clothes do you wear if you too have Blob issues?
P.S. I don't have health problems to cause this apart maybe from the fibroids but they are small and should be shrinking as I age (apparently).

I had this with fibroids - they can cause bloating and they can grow quickly so it might be worth getting them checked out again. I had a hysterectomy recently to get rid of them and my uterus was the size of a 20 week pregnancy. Mine didn’t decrease in size one bit with the menopause.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 15/07/2022 18:00

Hi there OP, I'm similar and it's depressing. From the front I can look ok but from the side I look pregnant. Get some funny looks at times as my face is clearly late 40s. Found this at Wallis www.wallis.co.uk/curve-beige-spot-button-through-dress/BYY02255.html that looks good on me and doesn't emphasise the blob. (Sorry can't do linky thing as on phone)

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 15/07/2022 18:01

Sorry linked to the plus size version as that's me. They also do the same dress in smaller sizes

Wow! I hope you're recuperating well. I have had them checked a couple of times when I first found out I had them and they hadn't grown.
It doesn't help I have bad posture.

I actually just ordered a button through shirt dress from Tu. It has a slightly raised waistline I think so fingers crossed.

If your looking at bikinis the roll down bottoms are flattering, and if it's an all in one suit high leg plus padded top is flattering as it takes the focus away from the tummy.

JasmineVioletRose · 16/07/2022 15:22

I'm liking the roll down ones 👍👍👍

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 16/07/2022 21:18

Ah... The Blob... I have it too. I've found the tie front dresses at M&S really help to cover it up! Here's an example: https://www.marksandspencer.com/animal-print-tie-front-midi-shirt-dress/p/clp60565706?intid=mobileappppdpshare

But if you search tie front dress on their website you'll find more.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 16/07/2022 23:39

I've got this one too. It looks fabulous on... can't see The Blob at all!

www.sosandar.com/blue-black-animal-print-faux-wrap-midi-dress

Someone further up the thread mentioned a higher waist... I've found that makes my blob look worse. This Sosander dress is cut really well for me with a lower waist it just skims all the bad bits.

HelloMaryJane · 18/07/2022 16:37

The Tu one arrived and it's a keeper. Skims The Blob pretty well.

MistyRock · 19/07/2022 07:48

May I ask does anyone tuck in tops. I know it's suppose to be flattering but I can't bring myself to do it.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 27/07/2022 17:48

Try Kit and Kaboodal, anything there really

MB34 · 27/07/2022 20:15

I'm the same. I can reduce mine a bit if I stay off the lactose and wheat (it's still there but I look 6 months pregnant instead of 9 😄)

Doesn't help I don't do floral either which everything seems to be now.

I bought these 2 recently. You can tie them lightly around the waist area. I still look big from the side but look OK from the front

As someone else mentioned, kit and kaboodal is good for flowy, although I don't know how they make them look good on the 2 slimmer models - I'm a size 16 and some of the stuff drowns me.

gimmepeaceandsky · 27/07/2022 20:20

Great post :)
I’m 43 and it’s been about 2 years that the dreaded blob appeared. It’s sad trying to believe that all my clothes looks nice on me. They simply don’t do anymore and I am constantly impulsively burying more and more.
Like some said, it looks ok ish at the front, but liking my sides I look 9 months bloody pregnant 😭
I’ve bought many dresses lately, I am not good on names but the wrap ones that shows a bit of my neck and chest to distract attention from the blob.
jeans and shorts I try to tuck shirts in but is just horrendous, I still can’t do it.
actually, I tuck each of my sides in a little bit and leave the front kind of covering the blob.

I bought swimming suit and also a super high waited bikini. I can live with the swimming suit - although I’ve been a bikini user all my life and I do struggle. And the high waisted bikini, I just bought but not sure I will be able to use it. They just look terrible on me :(

I am following for the comments :)

Springduckling · 27/07/2022 20:26

I feel your pain . Am currently having to find a 'smart skirt' or dress for an event and it is not easy. Dresses often sit wrongly on The Blob.
Am short also so many items hang around the floor.
Tops are really not a problem.
I just want a smart, knee length or a bit longer skirt either plain or with a subtle, non hideous pattern. Nout in m and s , and Next or local department store.
Anyway I will have a look at the links upthread.

Bunty55 · 27/07/2022 20:28

I have a tummy too. It's part of my story and I am unashamed.
Don't wear anything tight around the middle and do not look down/avoid mirrors is what I do.

Lovemusic33 · 27/07/2022 20:32

I had the blob appear when I turned 40, I’m struggling with clothes too. I do buy over sized tops and tuck them into jeans/short but doesn’t seem to work with skirts. I have a couple play suits that have a tie front which are ok ish but dresses make me look pregnant 😬

peridito · 27/07/2022 20:36

Snap
this is quite explanatory

AngelasEyelash · 27/07/2022 20:39

You are my people! I have a menopause apron and sideways on I looks like the mighty atom! I'm going to be a mother of the bride next year so pondering on what I can wear that will be stylish, flattering & comfy. Hearing good things about bombshell dresses - has anyone tried these?

KisstheTeapot14 · 27/07/2022 23:41

I thought I was alone with my Blob problem but happy to discover I am not! Place marking so I can catch up with suggestions tomorrow.

Outdoor Look do a nice cord pinnifore dress which skims the blob successfully. In aubergine and navy and certainly in size 16/18 possibly above. Maybe not summery but good for autum/winter.

exnewwifeproblems · 28/07/2022 07:06

Have a blob. Place marking.

MrsMigginsCat · 28/07/2022 07:15

Fellow blob here too. Unfortunately I have large norks so they kind of balance out the blob, but I look quite matronly instead. I follow quite a few curvy instagrammers and get inspiration from them. Wrap and shirred dresses seem to work quite well for me at the moment, but I'm still on the hunt for a pair of non-jean trousers that doesn't emphasise the blob.

Bodice · 28/07/2022 07:27

I have good legs so try to emphasize that. I wear lots of skater dresses and skirts. I go quite short on the skirt ( above the knee) with cycling shorts underneath. I keep colours plain on top. I don’t do the tucking in thing that we are always being told to do. In the winter am all about little skirts, plain jumpers tights and boots. I also love pinafore dresses.
I quite like a jump suit which I think can be chic for an occasion.

figmaofmyimagination · 28/07/2022 07:37

Watching for inspiration! I tend to buy dresses that fit over my boobs and then skim down. I have lean legs so try to emphasise that too! Find Autumn/Winter dressing so much easier.
