No idea how to pick glasses that suit me

Any help vastly appreciated. I’ve just had an eye test and will need to start wearing glasses. I feel like I tried on every single pair they had and none looked right. I think a lot of that is that I’m just not used to seeing myself in glasses! Where do I even start? The salesman was trying to push me into proper Harry Potter circle glasses. Based on the sunglasses I always go for I thought cat eyes would be a safe bet but I didn’t like those either!

I don’t want to put a picture of myself up here but I have name changed, I’m frequently told I look like Stacey Slater from Eastenders, and have been for the last 15 years so there must be something in it, and looking at recent pictures of the actress I do pretty much look the same as her right now, same face shape and colouring. Any ideas of where to start would be appreciated x I was in Specsavers if that makes a difference, their selection wasn’t great.

I always find it a bit overwhelming. You’re spending a lot of money. It’s hard to be objective. Do you have a friend who could go along with you who would be willing to be totally honest?

Jedstre · 14/07/2022 18:33

I was also going to suggest a friend who can give you an honest opinion to go with you.

Get the assistant to take photos of you wearing different frames.

Amipreg1 · 14/07/2022 18:35

You could perhaps order some frames to try on a free trial from glasses direct or similar.
You would at least then maybe find certain shapes that you like.

littleburn · 14/07/2022 18:42

I'd really recommend glasses direct too. You can trial 4 glasses at a time then just send them back and trial more until you find a style you like. It's a lot less pressured than choosing at the opticians and their prices are very competitive too.

JofraArchersFastestBall · 14/07/2022 18:58

You need somebody else to help - it's impossible to look at yourself objectively.

I love the at home try on ones, gives you a chance to try them for a bit longer, and take lots of photos without looking like a narcissist.

My last pair are from bloobloom and I love them, but I've also ordered from glasses direct before.

I was going to suggest glasses direct too. I always get my glasses from them, and it is nice having the home trial to try them on for as long as I want at home without a sales assistant hovering. If you have a second email address, you can have a second home trial at the same time, I find I often want to try 8 not 4

Some of the online sites have virtual try ones where you can upload a photo. A lot are very reasonably priced (about the same price as at-shirt). I have several pairs. Good as secondary pairs too if you have a main pair from the optician where your eyes were tested. Make sure you note down your Pupiliary Distance when an optician fits you for a pair so you can order more pairs/sunglasses online.😉

T-shirt

Definitely take someone with you. I had to choose glasses last week and it was much easier having someone else with me

Mine are also from Bloobloom and I love them - I got five frames to keep for a week and try on/wear with different things, and I chose two pairs in the end because I couldn't make my mind up.

Don't know if it will work for plain lenses but these sunglasses suit SS

I've worn glasses since I was 4 years old and still find it really hard 50 odd years later!
My tips:
I always take my daughter with me. She is very honest but sometimes gives me a push to try a different style.
So take someone who doesn't mind spending a long time with you while you try on and is honest, won't just tell you what you want to hear.

Look at your colouring. I'm blonde so find brownish frames are softer than black. Darker colouring Means you can wear black/brown.

Do you want to make a statement? Lots of really out there frames if you do. Try coloured frames.

If you want glasses that just blend in try rimless. Less noticeable when looking at yourself in the mirror which must be a shock if you've never worn them before.

I second using Specsavers website. You can narrow it down quite substantially using their clever tool that lets you try on glasses.

Good Luck!
