First hair colour appointment in two years - help!

Hi! I've spent the last two years growing out my grey hair in lockdown. It's very grey on top but there's a lot of brown underneath. Grey, compounded by the fact it's wavy, makes it look like I've just given up. I'm 42. I'm about to start a new career in the arts sector and I want something a bit cooler.

I don't mind the greys, but I think it could do with a bit more oomph. Maybe more grey? Some blonde? I've only ever had solid colours at the hairdressers, and this will be with a new hairdressers, so I don't want to give them total free rein.

It's shorter than I usually have it as I was trying to get rid of my old colour as fast as possible. It gets curlier as it gets longer, to a point, then it starts to flatten again, so I tend to keep it shoulder length.

Sorry for the terrible photos. It's hard to capture accurately as the grey looks very different in different lighting.

Any ideas? Thanks!

I absolutely love the curl in your hair! What sort of colours suit you?

My MIL has similar coloured hair and length to you, when we get ours done she gets half a head of highlights (to bring the bottom half up lighter) up to a similar level as her top half and some face framing highlights, then has several shades of blonde / ash blonde / super light brown put through through in toner. It looks fab on her, it's several different tones depending on the light, it makes her look brighter around the face (as the dark underside has been lightened) and just fresh looking. It's fairly natural looking too, but that's what she likes.

I'd be tempted to whack a crazy toner in now and again, and go auburn - but she's not a fan 😂

Ah cool, that sounds interesting MrszClaus, thanks. Yeah I think some sort of evening out is needed. I have pale-olivey skin depending on the time of year, and tend to wear jewel tone colours, never pastels. But maybe now I'm more silvery that might have changed, up until two years ago I had dark brown hair. I wear silver and gold jewellery, both seem to suit.

I've just realised you meant what hair colours suit me. I've only ever had dark brown! Apart from a bad red box dye experience as a teenager.
