Hairdressers tomorrow and no idea what to ask for, curly hair!

Due to anxiety and financial situation I don’t often go to the hairdressers but I’ve made an appointment, however have no idea what suits me. Any suggestions please?

It’s curly and very frizzy at the moment. I’ve no time for messing around with the various techniques I’ve seen online with plopping etc. I can’t straighten it either as it doesn’t suit me.

photo attached. I know it’sa total mess 😩

I also have curly hair but not as long as yours. I don’t think their is too much wrong with your hair I would either go for a good trim/restyle 2-3 inches off all over or more if your feeling brave and or ask the hairdresser what they think and also have a conditioning treatment at the salon.

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 13/07/2022 09:41

Thank you. It is too long and no proper layers, but it’s always tricky to get the layers right, as I can end up with either a triangle or a ball of hair!

I am feeling brave! I’m thinking about shoulder length, as it’s always knotty at the moment.

Your hair is lovely.
Ask for long layers, that should avoid the ball effect!

If that's your hair without much intervention, you're lucky as it looks fab.

I understand your reticence over time consuming methods... HOWEVER one of the reasons lots of people with textured hair get into various curly girl methods is because so few hairdressers understand that type of hair. Even if you get a good cut, it's rare to find a hairdresser who can style natural curls without resorting to drying it straight or using curling tongs. This heat, plus silicones and harsh shampoos, can end up making curly hair dry and brittle.

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 13/07/2022 10:24

Thank you 😊

Yes I only ask for a wash and cut these days, then let it dry naturally.

That’s my hair with just spray on Childs Farm leave in conditioner, nothing else. I wash with Childs Farm sls free shampoo and use silicone free conditioner.

I have hair that makes Hagrid look put together.

When people say stuff like "freshly washed and brushed hair will look neat" my eyes roll so hard because that makes my hair even more like a huge hedge.

But actually I want to embrace it more. It's not fair to equate smooth straight hair with neatness. So many people don't naturally have that.

Edwardoo · 13/07/2022 16:01

I think you've got lovely hair I would personally dye the greys and have a really moisturising mask or treatment done. Maybe a trim if split ends (can't see the ends properly from photo).

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 13/07/2022 16:04

Your hair is beautiful! I'd trim the ends, maybe get more long layers in if you feel you'd like them (but not short as this is what can give the muchroom effect) and possibly a root tint if you colour your hair yourself at home. It's really lovely though, not at all as you describe!

Report back with an 'after' photo, OP!

FannyFifer · 13/07/2022 16:15

A hairdresser experienced with curly hair is essential.
I have curly hair & in the past a wet cut had taken it too short, like they forgot the curls wld bounce up.
I use a wee bit of boots pink curl cream through my wet hair which sorts the frizz a good bit.

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 14/07/2022 14:38

I’ve been using Cantu curl cream, haven’t tried Boots curl cream yet.

Agree that neat hair shouldn’t equate to straight hair!

I’ve just had it trimmed, about two inches off.

Theres no curly hair hair dressers near me, but my hair dresser is ok.

Photo to follow!

WHERE IS THE PHOTO, OP? You promised!

Courgeon · 19/07/2022 16:50

I have very curly hair and I feel your pain! Most hairdressers are crap with curly hair... You end up with triangles or a mushroom.

I have no time for all the faffy expensive, time consuming stuff on Instagram either. I just want to wash, condition and put some product in and leave to dry naturally!

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 21/07/2022 00:27

Sorry for the delay, been a busy few days!

I have exactly the same hair as yours!
Just seen the second picture …so a bit shorter but not massively different?

Mine looked good when it was all one blunt length but the curls all hang down neatly ,somewhere between the length of your photons . Never found anyone who can achieve the look again though.
The greys are problematic and lightening curly hair just makes it look drier I think. Still at least other people like it.

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 21/07/2022 12:03

Yeah I just got it trimmed in the end, but it's much better, corking better too.

The cut looks great! I know you don't want a complex curl routine, but curls like yours and mine desperately need loads of moisture. A low fuss routine could be applying a little conditioner to soaking wet hair, scooping up in a microfibre towel or old t-shirt then letting air dry naturally.
If you do want to try a product for more hold/moisture/definition, I've recently tried Cantu hair custard which is absolutely brilliant - have tried loads of products out there and this is by far the best for my wavy/curly hair.
Apply to soaking wet hair, finger curl some ringlets, let it dr then gently scrunch out the crunch.

Londono · 21/07/2022 12:29

Looks fab, OP! I also need to add moisture to my curly hair as it is noticeably dry these days.

CountryMouse22 · 21/07/2022 12:30

Have it cropped for summer. Much easier to care for!

Nowyouseemenowy0udont · 21/07/2022 13:35

Oooh no, not cropped! Then people might look at my face 😂
I do have Cantu curl custard, I quite like it.

If anyone's looking for an easy curly method I do flip coat scrunch which is the easiest and cheapest I've found. There's a hairdresser on Instagram who does videos of it, you might find them under the #flipcoatscrunch hashtag.

I wash and condition my hair normally with whatever is cheap and I like the smell of, often Lidl's own or Alberto Balsam etc. You want something cheap enough that you don't mind using plenty of conditioner as it helps you detangle. Expect to use conditioner at a ratio of 2-3 bottles per bottle of shampoo.

Before rinsing the conditioner I flip my head over by bending forward in the shower and rinse while detangling by raking my fingers through as if they were a comb.

If your hair is fine then you'll probably want to rinse all the conditioner out if it's thicker and coarser then leave some in so it feels smooth. Your fingers should be going through it easily at this point.

Then I turn off the water and rake through some cheap gel. The best I've found that is easily got from supermarkets etc is Shockwaves, usually £2.25 for 200ml or cheaper in The Range/home bargains sometimes. Use quite a bit of gel, you know Tunnocks teacakes? At least a blob that size. Then scrunch your hair, it should feel and sound all squelchy and look stringy at this point.

Then I flip my head back over to the right way up and see how mental I look. If it's all stuck to my head at the back then I might rake that bit through with my fingers and scrunch it again or shake my head about a bit, that's all. Scrunch until it's not dripping too much. Don't do a parting or anything don't bother plopping and put a towel round your shoulders for drips.

Then allow to dry for a few hours (this is what I usually do, if doing this you may want to wash early evening rather than morning) or diffuse if you want, in a pinch you can use a normal hairdryer on lowish speed as the gel should protect your curls enough to get a good result.

When it's completely dry it will be all crunchy like it's the 90s and you'll curse me for convincing you to try this but if you just scrunch again (upside down is easiest) you'll break the cast and reveal nice defined curls.

If you put your hair up in a bobble or scrunchie or clip or whatever at the top of your head (yeah sexy) at night time then it'll last a bit longer. Some people can go a week between washes with this. My hair is very porous (mostly grey, dyed) so mine doesn't last as long but I wash about twice a week.

See mine is the opposite! Never wants moisture, I have to use SO much protein
