Sulphate free/silicone free for bright fashion colour and reacting scalp

I have problem scalp and react to many shampoos and conditioners.

I also have bright red hair so sulphate free helps my colour last longer as well as reducing the risk of scalp irritation.

When my scalp flares I have to use T Gel to calm it down which then stripsy colour. It is probably undiagnosed scalp psoriasis or something but have never been referred to a dermatologist for confirmation.

I've tried so many different shampoos and conditioners and nothing seems to suit my hair type. It's naturally curly, frizzy, fine but thick (if that's even possible!), flyaway, colour damaged from years of bleach abuse and I'm also 10 months postpartum with all the new baby hair coming through. I have those annoying horns at the top of my hairline currently haha!

Can anyone recommend a good but not too expensive shampoo that might suit me? I'm fed up of spending money on a shampoo, using it once or twice and reacting and it just festering in a cupboard because I can't use it again. In the long term I'm going to have to get some allergy testing done I think but the NHS doesn't seem forthcoming in that regard.

Brands I have recently tried:

  • Body shop ginger (not sulphate free but soothing to my scalp but driedy hair out and stripped colour)
  • Liz earle - good but colour faded quicker than usual. I would probably use this regularly if I had the motivation to dye my hair more often.
  • Palmers (previously raved about this and it started out great in 2020 when I first tried it but formula seemed to change this year and now its really hard to get out the bottle and heavy and greasy in my hair)
  • Kerastase light blue bottle (heavy and greasy after one wash)
  • Aveeno (made my hair so dense and lank and coated but good for my scalp no reaction)
  • OGX (lots of different types/flavours. Dried my hair out. Since read reports of causing hair loss so avoided since)
  • Tried pretty much all high street brands which aren't sulphate free leave my hair feeling good but then scalp reacts and itches and gets sores and flaky skin.

I'm looking for the holy grail of shampoo apparently which probably doesn't exist 😂😭

Faith in nature. Your hair sounds exactly like mine, curly and red 😂 also have frizzy horns 🙌

Also one thing I can't live without is osmo deep repair mask. My scalp is also really sensitive

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 12/07/2022 15:41

Thanks. Just looking on H&B now. Wow so many scents! I'll order some and give that one a try.

I love the Philip Kingsley elasticizer mask but I'll try the osmo one too.

I have a scalp that reacts to everything. Except child's farm shampoo and conditioner. Recommend using it consistently for a few months before you decide its not working for you.

My favourite faith in nature is the coconut 😁

Blimey the osmo mask is a fraction of the cost of the PK one.

Just ordering a top up of hair dye so added some to the order. I will make sure I report back. I've gone for dragon fruit for my first try. Never even heard of faith in nature so glad I asked!

I've tried that one too, I use it on my kids and it really dried my hair out.

I've moved away from box dyes and bleach now towards a more natural semi dye so would consider trying it again when my hair is in better condition.

Hope it works for you @HopelesslyHopeful87
What hair do you use if you don't mind me asking?

ZeroFucksGiven20 · 12/07/2022 15:51

Sorry I meant hair dye

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 12/07/2022 15:51

Ok thanks. I wouldn't mind going a bit brighter

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 12/07/2022 15:58

That's mine from a while ago. It's very overdue a colour currently 🙃

I get a lot of compliments on the colour and it's a lovely shade of red without looking cheap and tacky iykwim. And that's on medium brown hair, not prelightened. I've just cut the last of my bleach out. Tried to use Live XXL box dyes and just doesn't give the same result

Yeah the colour looks really rich and expensive. Makes your eyes pop.

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 12/07/2022 16:26

If you try it be prepared to stain everything you go near for a week or so 😅

Haha thanks for the heads up! I usually stay copper and I've just bought loreal vivids electric mango to try. I'm naturally really dark so it doesn't go super bright on me. Might try manic panic next time though for a change 👌

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 24/08/2022 16:00

Just coming back to say thank you for the recommendation. Been using faith in nature since the week I started this thread and no reactions and no severe colour fade.

I do find it's a bit drying but I got the osmo mask as well and that seems to counteract that if I use it weekly.

Thanks again.
