Very basic question about creams…

TheRussianDoll · 11/07/2022 18:32

I’ve recently bought a neck cream. It’s lovely. It appears to be making my neck less crepy. No miracles expected as I’m 60. Ageing, it is what it is!
My question is this… can I use this neck cream on my face with my eye cream? I’ve got dry skin and this feels lovely and moisturising.

Why do companies say one cream for this area and another for that area? If it’s a “no” can anyone recommend a not horrendously expensive day cream for me?

'Why do companies say one cream for this area and another for that area?"

To sell you more products of course! I see no reason why you couldn't try it on your face.

HairyFeline · 11/07/2022 19:03

It might be a bit heavy for your facial skin, OP, and block the pores…the eye area especially is very thin so you’d probably do best with a cream specific for that area. Clarins do lovely eye cream.

TheRussianDoll · 11/07/2022 22:22

It does occur to me that it’s a way of selling more products. Years ago, I went down the “everything from one range” and day/night/serum/eye cream. Now, I just want one thing (I do use a nice eye cream specifically @HairyFeline but thanks for the recommendation). I know that’s unreasonable but I don’t have time for “layering” anymore. Actually, I do, but I’d rather not.

I’ll try it. See what happens.

Anyone have any recommendations for tired post menopausal skin? Appreciate it 😊

Marketing ploy.

Use the neckcream on your face, it will be fine.

Squalene oil is nice to add over a moisturiser for extra hydration

Oceanus · 11/07/2022 23:49

You can use eye cream everywhere (though I'm not sure it does anything much), you shouldn't use neck cream everywhere though. It was explained to me by a nice person in a pharmacy (in a conversation that started with glyc. acid and sunscreen) our eyelids have the thinnest skin in the body so they are prone to absorving more and they might cause allergies and other problems if we use anything that's not been tested on eyes. This was how I learnt we shouldn't use sunscreen near the eye, it has to be a special one that can go on the lid. Though tbh what I took away from that conversation was there's sunscreen for eyes?! Say what?! Haven't tried it though, that sunscreen for eyes but only because it was out of stock not for lack of want.

Try the Ferrulic CE Serum from SkinCeuticals. My skin isn't post menopausal (yet) but I've heard real people rave about that and azelaic acid too (I love rosehip oil). Shiseido never disappoints too and I love love love Hada Labo but I'm not sure what to recommend for your skin.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/07/2022 02:07

What's the neck cream, OP? I am in dire need of something, anything that might help my turkey wattles. Even if it only helps a bit....

MarshaMelrose · 12/07/2022 02:20

I think most creams are formulated for the face and neck but make sure it's comedogenic. Ie doesn't give you blackheads and spots by blocking your pores.
Eye cream is formulated differently. Dermatologists say that you can use face cream around your eyes so you don't need to spend extra money. However, eye cream costs more because its formulated differently and whereas face cream can give you milia under your eyes, eye creams shouldn't. Also eye creams can make your make up sit properly instead of pilling up.
So much information out there it gets confusing.

Oceanus · 12/07/2022 02:22

Following on from the PP! Avoid the Lâncome balm for eyes (the green one) as it gave me millia!

TheRussianDoll · 12/07/2022 15:10

@SiobhanSharpe It’s M&S Formula Neck & Décolletage. Does smell a bit oily/blah, but feels plumping. I was using Strivectin but it got to be too expensive. It was giving me worry lines waiting for my Amex bill to come in!
I’m still using their eye cream but may go less expensive when it’s finished.
Anyone tried the M and S Sleep Cream?

I think at first, when I try something new I think “this stuff is good!”
Over time, less so. As I say, there are no miracles on offer. I may reassess my hair. It’s long and isn’t doing me any favours. Maybe, need a fringe. I’ve had the same “do” for years. Same hairdresser too and we’re in a mutual relationship of “highlights/lowlights and a trim?” 😂 Might put some pics up later of hairdos over the past 10 yrs and get a mumsnet opinion.

@Oceanus My mum swore by Lancôme but it was always too perfumed for me. Too expensive as well. Did use their mascaras for years, though.

I’ve got the neck cream all over today. Seems nice. Got my spf 50 on top and not greasy at all.

Ought to have mentioned… can’t do retinol or glycolic acid.
Makes me itch!

Getting shocking chin pores but as I say, peels/retinol right out, for me. Hair scraped back as I’m walking the dog (doesn’t do anyone any favours! 😂

I think you're very attractive with nice glowy skin. We're all far too critical of ourselves!

TheRussianDoll · 12/07/2022 15:24

It’s a swine isn’t it, @Popsicle33 now, at all ages, we’re pressured to look our best.

A lot of skincare products are a marketing ploy! You really need to read the ingredients and understand if it can be used all over.

For expensive creams, La Mer is the best but over £100! For mid-range, I'd say Clarins is best for an all in one. For best value I'd say Q10.

Oceanus · 12/07/2022 21:06

OP I think Lâncome is a bit or miss tbh but I can often get it with a nice discount or get samples so why not?! haha! But it's not a favourite for skincare though I enjoy their eyeshadow palettes,.
@EveParker22 I've never tried La Mer but I know it smells divine! I don't know where you're getting it that cheap though! Over here, I think even foundation is over 120 euros and tiny creams over 200. I've never tried it mostly because of the price but also because when I was at uni my flatmate worked at Sephora and she bathed in all the expensive stuff on the daily (La Mer and Prairie) and she wasn't impressed. So it makes it a little easier for me to give it a pass, though I wouldn't mind trying it (as long it was reduced to 20-ish quid! haha), I do love trying shiny new things.

SiobhanSharpe · 12/07/2022 22:24

Many thanks OP, I will give it a try. 🙂

SiobhanSharpe · 12/07/2022 22:27

PS - you look great, I'd never have guessed your age!

TheFutureIs · 12/07/2022 22:27

You've got fab skin, and you look quite youthful. In terms of creams etc for a no fuss regime I'd suggest either the glossybox range or Sali Hughes stuff for Revolution. Both just have the basics but work really well

TheRussianDoll · 12/07/2022 23:27

Can’t afford La Mer. That’s right out! @Oceanus 😂 “Shiny new things”. There’s an element of that, for sure. Always hoping research comes up with the magic pit of cream.

@EveParker22 Nivea link reads well!

And to finish. My dog today. I walk miles with her so, she’s probably better than any skin creams for the healthy glow!
