If you shave your legs and want to reduce plastic

In case any MNers wanted a tip or something to try, I've been using a safety razor for about a year now and honestly it has been great. It takes a little bit of getting used to - the technique is a bit different to a normal razor but it shaves closer than anything else and there is no plastic waste.

After the initial purchase of the handle and some blades to get you going it's a lot cheaper as well.

I bought the handle and blades from Amazon, and a little pot to put the used blades in. That's all you need. The handle was about £15 but will last forever and a pack of 100 blades costs about £10. I use one blade every 2 or 3 weeks.

I hope this helps someone either from an environmental perspective or a money saving viewpoint.

Thanks for the post, this isn't something I'd considered before. What's different about the technique?

Do you mean one of those old school razors where you get the blades in a little rectangular package and place them in the razor?

hugoagogo · 08/07/2022 17:11

I have one too and it is great, but you have to be a bit careful to not cut yourself. I am a bit lazy and not too fussy about stubble, so mostly use my rechargeable electric razor. Not quite as green, but I already have it.

The technique is not too different, I suppose. It's just that you press much more lightly. The handle itself is heavy so you sort of just rest it against your skin and let the weight of the razor do the work as you pull it along. If you pressed it like, say, a Venus, you would cut yourself.

ThickCutSteakChips yes, I think that's what it is. The top of the razor unscrews and you slot in a new blade. The blades come in a little box of 5, each individually wrapped in wax paper.

Can you link the one you bought please? Interested in this!

So do the blades still get thrown away?

You can put the whole disposal tin in the metal recycling, I think. It crushes closed so it is safe for the bin men.

But literally it will take me two years to fill that tin up with used blades, I think. It is about the size of a credit card on its base, so that's very little waste.

Can you shave your fanny with this sort if razor? I'm just thinking with the heavier weight and the angles it might not work that well?

StewardsEnquiry · 08/07/2022 17:37

I just do around the edges and it works fine for that.

Armpits, also excellent. Closest shave ever.
