Can anyone help me with my dd's curls?

When short, it'd be very curly but it's now long and tends to some frizziness especially on the top. I want to get her something to smooth that out and bring out some curl or wave but I'm lost in the curly girl stuff, I haven't a clue. I'm going to end up going to boots and dropping a fortune on stuff I have no idea if it works.

She's tried leaving in a bit of conditioner and plopping, but after a night's sleep it's all frizzed up again. I got some silicone free shampoo (faith in nature) but still not sure what the right things are.

Happy to buy her something nice if it works, I just can't understand it all! All this about needing more protein or less protein, Co washing, silicone.

Should I just go and buy her some frizz ease?

As per my name, I have curly hair.

If she's wearing her hair down, then you just need to wet it in the morning to scrunch it back up. I use a water spray bottle (bit like one you can use to water your plants with) and spray mine every morning.

What I would probably do if I had DC with long curly hair (have two DS with short hair) is tie it back when it's wet after washing. Braids and pigtails are the best. You will probably need to brush it out and tie it back up again in the morning, but it should generally be less of a birds nest. I also do this with my own hair if I know I'm not going to be wearing it down the next day.

IMO opinion curly girl is too complicated. It should just be:
Don't wash your hair everyday
Use a good conditioner
Use a tonne of mouse/gel/curl creme
Wet it every morning and scrunch it up
Diffuse it to set the curl but not to dry it

I'd keep it simple. I did CG for a while and now use a sulphate free shampoo then CG friendly for all other products. I really like the Shea Moisture purple range if I'm feeling flush: www.boots.com/shea-moisture-superfruit-complex-10-in-1-multi-benefit-shampoo-10204068

Or for cheaper options, the Papaya one of these is CG approved:

Shall can rinse the conditioner out then apply a little bit as a leave in.

This gel is really good and you can buy a mini to see if it suits her hair. If it makes her hair crunchy (that's good!) she should wait till it's completely dry then scrunch the crunch out: www.boots.com/umberto-giannini-curl-jelly-scrunching-jelly-mini-10243327

I'd use a t-shirt or microfibre towel instead of a normal towel which can cause frizz. I use something like this: www.marksandspencer.com/recycled-microfibre-hair-turban/p/hbp60456198

some people find plopping helps and some find it causes frizz so maybe experiment a bit on how she wraps her hair (or just scrunch out excess moisture with the t-shirt). Overnight, I use a satin scrunchie to put my hair in a high ponytail (pineapple) then the next day I wet my hands and mix a tiny bit of conditioner or gel in and run my hands over my hair so it's slightly damp and scrunch a little. This helps get rid of any overnight frizzies. Some people also like silk pillowcases to help with overnight frizz.

How old is DD? How much hair care is she doing independently? How long is her hair?

When she is bathed/showered try to ease some water out of the hair a bit with your hands, but don’t towel dry. Apply her curl product after conditioner is rinsed out, but while she’s still in the bath/shower and the hair is still quite drippy/wet, encourage the curls into their little clumps with your fingers and then let it air dry once she gets out.

To refresh the curls in a morning you could get a water spray bottle and wet them down again and they should spring back. A tiny of serum spread well out onto your hands massaged into the parting and hair line should help smooth any frizzy bits, but don’t run your fingers through the curls as this will separate them and make more frizz.

A silk/satin pillowcase can also be helpful if she’s getting fuzzy hair at the back from a cotton pillowcase.

*"She can" not "Shell can" Blush!

If her hair is quite short, shoulders or above then tying it up or plopping might not work and will just separate the curls and create frizz. I have this problem with my chin length curls. If I went want my hair off my face I use some of those little butterfly clips to pull it back on each side to cause minimal interruption to the curls.

DD's hair also gets frizzy. And very very knotty as she won't let me comb it out often enough. But, I more or less sort of keep it under control by:

  • almost never washing it. It doesn't need a lot of washing as it doesn't get oily.
  • I try to rinse it out properly and condition it properly at least once a week. Followed by leave in Moroccon Hair Ol conditioner and then combing through.
IDEALLY, I'd dampen it and very lightly respray with the leave in conditioner and a quick finger comb every morning - but I struggle to get her to do that.

I find frizz ease etc has very limited benefit.

If she is going to be wearing it loose, I will put in a curl definer (also a Moroccan Hair Oil one) but that does leave build up on the hair so the day after it needs a good rinse at the very least.

This advice all sounds v complicated!

My child has this hair OP. We just use My Little Coco spray on it in the mornings. A quick spray and a scrunch and you're done.

We only brush it when it's wet (bathtime), and with a wide tooth comb.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/07/2022 12:15

My 9 yo has curly hair. She doesn't wash it daily but biggest change came from using separate shampoo and conditioner and not 2 in 1. Also uses a spray conditioner and ties it back for school.

Justkoko · 08/07/2022 13:24

Hair is below shoulders, dd is 14.
