First razor for teens

Evening all

Just that really. DD has been useing a lady shave but bless her her hair grows back quickly, dark and I think, coarse. The lady shave is, quite literally, just not cutting it anymore.

I think she'll get on fine with a classic razor (I'm thinking like Venus where you just replace disposable blades) however she's crack handed at times and a bit clumsy.
Hopefully when she gets the hang of it it's a quick 3 minute job in the shower once or twice a week.

So I wondered if any one had recommendations fora good one, not horribly expansive.

My DD and I use razors from the mens section on the supermarket because they a lot less than “ladies” ones. They work a treat,

YohY20 · 06/07/2022 23:33

I bought my DD a new razor which can shave both forwards and backwards. Wasn't sure if this would lead to problems when forced to use a normal razor but so far so good.
Wilkinson Sword brand

whiteroseredrose · 07/07/2022 00:12

Would you consider waxing?

I paid for that for my DD while she was young and probably not coordinated enough to shave.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/07/2022 11:08

Thanks all.

I have thought of waxing but (and never waxed my own legs just bikin area) my understanding was you need to leave it a while so there's enough to grab but in the meantime her hair is so dark it's very noticeable. Maybe we could think about doing it after winter when she's able to hide her legs a while.

Poor kid she is incredibly dark hairy everywhere I think it's getting her down Sad

How old is she? I'm considering the same thing for my DD who is 12 (in Y7). She hasn't said anything yet but I don't want any cruel comments. Also very hairy (her gran is Greek!)

Oh bless. I think we often project a bit as we know how cruel other girls can be Sad

Mine is almost 14.

I'd just get a Venus - fairly easy to use, you can get all sorts of blades (moisturising) for them.

Men's razors I think if she's cack handed she'd cut herself on them more.

Wilkinson Sword I always found rubbish for shaving!

Hugasauras · 07/07/2022 13:10

I have an Estrid subscription. Really like it!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 07/07/2022 13:11

Would @leccybill and OP either of you think about investing in IPL for your DDs? You can get good deals on Groupon and other deal sites sometimes.

Only saying as a friend of mine who has Indian parents got this done a few years ago and couldn't praise it enough (she also got bikini wax area done too). Said she'd wished she'd had it done years ago.

BanjoVio · 07/07/2022 13:13

I reckon just give the girl a razor, everyone learns somehow. After a couple of nicks she’ll be more careful.

leccybill · 07/07/2022 15:14

I don't even know what IPL is!

Mushroo · 07/07/2022 15:24

I was her and honestly the most life changing thing was getting laser hair removal in my twenties.

my hair was so dark and thick that even when I shaved, you could see the hair below the skin and I had terrible in grown hairs.

So I’d suggest a really good razor and shaving cream for now (the more expensive Venus ones are good) then if possible, putting money towards laser.

I think it is honestly the best thing I’ve paid for in terms of improving my confidence.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 07/07/2022 16:06

Mmmmm.

Ok. So I'm leaning toward getting her one like Venus - not used that type in she's but I remember they're fairly smooth to move especially around knees and ankles.

I think I'll look into laser for in the future.

Thanks you lot Grin

Venus - nice and smooth. Revelation when they first came out!

I preferred the Venus disposable one now but they last ages. I also have an epilator.

She will manage ok I'm sure. And shaving cuts are a right of passage.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 07/07/2022 19:53

My clumsy dd has these razors. They have a 'cage' of wore over the blades so you can't cut yourself.

stormelf · 07/07/2022 19:54

I've just started to use a traditional safety razor (DH has been using one for years) I have very thick dark hair and this gives me the best shave. I am also extremely uncoordinated and would often cut myself numerous times with normal women's razors but the safety razor is so easy to use that I barely cut myself at all.

SummaLuvin · 07/07/2022 20:32

I used to really like Wilkinson Sword Intuition which has replaceable heads embedded in soap, and I think its a little more foolproof, but expensive. Now I just use Venus with replaceable heads and a, very happy with them. She will nick herself, it's part of shaving, but she will learn, and it's not disastrous.

I'm 40+ and still have days when I have to walk about for a bit with the "bit of loo role on bleeding cut" on my leg/ankle.

Thanks folks. I'll be honest I was feeling a bit bad as I think it's often frowned upon to give them a razor yet (as apparently their will have grown ten fold by the following am Confused) but she'll be fine.

Bics are great, either women's or men's. They're really good quality.

I think it would be crueller to push her into hair removal if she's shown no sign of wanting it and seems happy enough. Please try to avoid teaching your girl that she should change herself just so she can try to avoid unkind comments from fools trying to control her. That's likely to put more of a knock on her sense of self and self-esteem than any individual silly comment that might arise (but might even not).

laser hair removal. I've never had it done and wasn't that hairy but even now years later would probably consider it!

What I would suggest also is getting her a proper shaving gel/mousse. I like Sensitive Ones (Venus) as opposed to the usual ones but really found it made a difference to me!
