How to wear uniform which is too small??

hugeandembarrassed · 05/07/2022 22:27

I'm looking for some tips on how to manage this particular problem.

I normally don't wear uniform to work, but I'm going to have to for a trip to a different site in a couple of weeks.

I don't have my own uniform (because I almost never wear it) so will have to select it from the stores. I know from experience that the maximum size is a 20, and that they come up small. I am currently 20-22.

I'm wondering about wearing a long dark vest over the trousers, in case I can't do them up properly - but will have to hope they don't fall down!

Any other tips I could try? It's literally for 2-3 hours so I don't mind being slightly uncomfortable if needed.

Unfortunately my weight is linked to a medical issue so unlikely to able to get it down much in a couple of weeks!

What does the uniform consist of OP? For example are they a particular colour trouser and you can get away with wearing your own or are they logoed?

Get a an elastic belt from Amazon so you don’t have to worry c trousers falling down and the top doesn’t bulge out.

vest top sounds good to cover - Yours so long line ones.

Then is it a shirt on top?

Try and go early so you also grab a mens pair so you can see what fits best

Thanks both - really helpful ideas Smile

  • uniform is navy trousers, lighter top
  • can't get away with wearing anything other than branded ones unfortunately
  • elastic belt is a good idea!
  • there are specific male/female uniforms 🙄🙄 so can't pinch from men's section

I'm annoyed with myself that I'm in this situation...

You could try a smoothing vest, not Spanx but that sort of an idea but less fierce than Spanx.

Depending on the fastening of the trousers, a hairbsnd looped through the button hole and the bottom gives a bit of extra room

Good thinking - I remember doing this when I was pregnant!

A hair bobble looped through the button hole of trousers is a good trick. I like the idea of a vest to avoid gape. Maybe a minimiser bra or sports bra to squash boobs in to give extra room in the top too.

Ah flip, cross posted while finding my picture!

Your username is really sad 😔 It's terrible that the uniform doesn't go up to your size - it's the company that should be embarrassed, not you.

As it can't be helped, i would get some spanx and breathe in as much as possible. If it's possible, laying down can help when doing up tight trousers.

RampantIvy · 05/07/2022 22:54

Would they not make an exception for you to wear another pair of navy trousers that fit and are comfortable? It isn't very sporting of them to make you wear clothes that don't fit and that you might not even be able to do up.

I wish they would! Unfortunately it's very strict.

I think spanx/similar, a stretchy belt, long vest & being very careful what I eat (wheat/diary can make me bloat, which makes it even harder) is all I can do

Thank you all for not judging me - I was afraid people would tell me it's my own fault and I should diet.

Your company should be ashamed of themselves. It is surely discriminatory. I would complain they don't have your size.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 05/07/2022 23:18

Even if your weight wasn't related to a medical issue, you shouldn't be put in this position. If you can do the job - you can do the job. Logo-ed top or not!

janesmithsdog · 05/07/2022 23:31

Is it worth contacting them? They might have had employees needing bigger sizes before and have a solution. Hugs to you, this stuff is hard.

Fuuuuuckit · 05/07/2022 23:32

The onus is on them to supply uniform that fits (or pay for alterations, or to have something made to order). If your weight/size is related to a medical concern, ask for a reasonable adjustment re the uniform.

You cannot be expected to wear something that doesn't fit, simply because they don't provide one that isn't your size.

Pbbananabagel · 05/07/2022 23:52

For the top, Unpick the side seems at the hem a few inches and use hemming tape/hand stitch the raw edges for a neat finish- this will give you some room at the sides and make you feel more comfortable as the top will skim over you better (nearly all the tops I buy tend to have sides like this now, I’m a size 20ish in a lot of brands since child 2)

Pbbananabagel · 05/07/2022 23:55

Search YouTube for a tutorial on how to add a side vent to a shirt

hugeandembarrassed · 06/07/2022 08:05

Thanks again - unfortunately it's a case of grab uniform and go, so no opportunity to make adjustments.

I'll have a look at that waistband extender Smile
