Do they bugger up your hair after a while??

Bump

Do you mean Brazilian Straightening? If so I’ve been having them for about 4 years now (apart from during lockdown obviously) and my hairs the best it’s ever been. They last up to about 5 months and I think their great, my thick frizzy, unmanageable hair is transformed and it dries so much quicker and sleeker.
Not cheap though and there are different brands so you need to speak to your hairdresser first to see what’s right for you.
Certainly don’t think my hairs been ruined in anyway.

Never had Brazilian Blow Dry but have had Japanese Straightening / Thermal Reconditioning for about 15 years. I think the Japanese is more permanent than the Brazilian. For buggering up your hair, I guess it does a bit because, for me, the roots growing in are frizzy/wavy and the rest is pretty poker straight. I've never had the patience or desire to grow it out to frizzy hair so I'm pretty financially committed to this hairstyle. Also, dyeing the hair with these straightening chemicals can adversely affect the hair, so I won't dye my hair.

They're a pain in the arse. Can't put hair in a band for a week or get it damp due to kinks/settling in so can't do any sports or work up any kind of sweat. OK in the winter I guess. I had one and it worked ok but found it too restrictive in first week - I'll stick with my natural curls and good conditioner to tame the frizz.

garlicandsapphires · 05/07/2022 21:56

I’ve had it done at the hairdressers and done the dyi one at home which is extremely noxious. Neither were worth the time or expense imo.

Battlecat98 · 05/07/2022 21:59

I have had kerastraight you can wash you hair about an hour after you have it and put it up. It's not recommended though. My frizzy thick hair is suddenly manageably. Highly recommend.

neverendingpartywallproblems · 05/07/2022 22:04

I've been having them done for over 4 years (with break for COVID) and my hair is amazing condition. No longer need to use heat to style, really quick blow dry and out the house. Don't do anything more to my hair until next wash

Admittedly I use a milder product which is free of formaldehyde and also is washed out on day of treatment so no need to keep it in same position for more than a few hours. Due to product being less strong, it only takes away the frizz, hair is not completely straight or flat but is exactly what I want

HardRockOwl · 05/07/2022 22:07

Can anyone recommend a decent home one? I currently pay £200 for the nanokeratin in salon

Nothappyatwork · 05/07/2022 22:08

I had my hair bleached blonde and these blow dries and literally my hair was snapping off the route it was horrendous

Nyancat · 05/07/2022 22:20

Not sure what type of one I got done ar the hair dressers but it's been a game changer. I haven't straightened my hair in over 3 months now, half the time I just leave it to dry naturally and it dries straight. My hair is in far better condition simply from not using heat on it.

declutteringmymind · 05/07/2022 22:24

@neverendingpartywallproblems what is this magic you speak of?

Like OP I really want to do a keratin treatment but I cba

mafted · 05/07/2022 22:25

I loved mine but I also love swimming and we have a hot tub and the chlorine stops them lasting so long.
However I got the dyson hairdryer which gives me the same smooth effect really easily.

neverendingpartywallproblems · 06/07/2022 11:36

@declutteringmymind I'll be honest, it is a huge pain spending 3hrs at the hairdresser every 6 months for it to be done but it has the desired effect on my hair and I don't touch straighteners until a week or 2 before it needs doing. Overall, I consider that 3hrs well spent to have the luxury of washing my hair in the morning, rough dry and out the door but when I am sitting in the chair, it is so long!

I don't swim regularly and only wash twice a week which helps maintain it so it does depend on lifestyle and can completely understand why some feel it is not for them

xogossipgirlxo · 06/07/2022 11:55

I used to do this treatment. I actually bought new set, because I had quite a bit of break. Love it, but you have to remember to look after your hair properly even though you feel tempted not too, because they are so sleek and straight.

LadyEloise1 · 07/07/2022 09:27

@neverendingpartywallproblems
What one do you get please ?

thethoughtfox · 07/07/2022 10:21

I used to get it before every holiday on 5pm website as you can usually find somewhere doing it for £100. It makes a huge difference. I went to Thailand and was the only tourist with their hair down. It stayed sleek and straight even in the jungle.

One year I left it too late to book an appointment so I Googled it and came across an old MN thread where people recommended a home one. It's £26 on Amazon called Brazilian Straight Complete Keratin Treatment Kit; it's in a purple box. It's got hundreds of positive reviews. It lasts for several months on my hair (wavy) and I don't bother with the special shampoos.

heartchakra · 07/07/2022 10:22

Is that where you blow dry your bald fanny? 😂

thethoughtfox · 07/07/2022 10:23

It also seems to make my hair look longer and the colour brighter.

SnBLurker · 07/07/2022 12:06

I did an at home one a couple of times.

Pros : Hair dries so much quicker
Much smoother and shiny
Looks in much better condition

Cons: Very strong and chemical smell
Gets greasy very quickly
Looks a bit flat
Can't go swimming in a pool or the
sea!

Overall, the cons outweighed the pros for me. Plus my hair has thinned a lot since I last did it (assuming not related!) and would look awful on me now! You have to have very thick, frizzy hair I think, for this to be beneficial.

maryberryslayers · 07/07/2022 14:54

I've been having one for over 10 years my hair is in incredible condition.
I have it every 4 months and it's cut the time it takes to dry and style my waist length hair from over an hour to 15mins.
Go to a good high end salon as the quality of product used varies.

MuchasSmoochas · 07/07/2022 17:48

I used the at home one called ANSR, it was very good. Shoulder length hair, used half a bottle. You wash it out on same day.
