What is the bit at the bottom?

This is my daughters emergency prom dress after the one we ordered was a disaster! We love this one, we've bought it and now I'm looking at the bottom bit, there's like 2 inches of stiff material at them bottom, is this meant to taken out? Or is this just how formal dresses are!? I know it seems crazy that I don't know but I have no experience of prom dresses.

What is the bit at the bottom?

Did you buy it off a website? How was it described? It looks very long

ilovecherries · 05/07/2022 20:59

It’s called a horsehair edge and it’s meant to be there to keep the flared shape at the bottom of the dress. However this dress is too long - the trim shouldn’t touch the floor to work properly. It would be shortened above the trim.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It's from a prom dress shop. They said the dresses would all be too long and that they didn't have time for alterations so I knew it would be too long. Is there anything I can do? I'm a complete amateur but I can use a needle and thread!

What a lovely fabric! How long have you got?

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 06/07/2022 07:32

Call the shop and ask them how they would do it?

Naughtygg · 06/07/2022 07:33

I'm taking her to prom at 5pm! (Eek)

This was on the bottom of my niece's dress so the shop altered it by cutting it off and sewed the hem so the dress just touched the floor.

fizzyfood · 06/07/2022 07:41

Remember to have shoes on when measuring the length

wibblewobbleball · 06/07/2022 07:43

Unless you are good at altering I would literally just take it off and shorten it with a normal hem

Trulyweird1 · 06/07/2022 07:46

Do you have an alteration shop near you who may be able to take the dress up? If not and you have to do it yourself, keep this trim and after the prom, take drsss and trim to a tailor and have them put it back on.
It really makes a difference to the shape of the dress.

it’s a pretty dress, hope she enjoys her prom.

Naughtygg · 06/07/2022 07:59

Thank you all, I'm looking up last minute alterations shops

Or ask if any friends could quickly hem it? Or have you a local Facebook group?

OvertheRainbow2U · 06/07/2022 08:13

or iron on hem - very handy if you are nervous..

I found an alteration shop, it says on the door 7 day turn around but I told them it was dress for tonight's prom and they were really helpful! The lady even had a daughter who went to prom 2 weeks ago with the same dress so she shall go to the ball!
