I am due to go away at the end of the month and am now, finally, able to get excited (as opposed to waiting for the flights to be cancelled.) Hence, a bit of window shopping for flights is helping pass the time...

I will be taking three planes, one of which will be an 11.5hr flight so want to be comfortable but also not too hot at the other end, or cold during the flight. I vaguely like the idea of this but suspect it's rather overpriced. I'd wear a light white t-shirt under it.

I have also got various other options already at home that I will probably go for, but like the idea of browsing for ideas as I am really excited! It feels like so long since I've flown that I've forgotten what it's like!

Please tell me about your ideas / suggestions / purchases...

WE fly long haul once or twice a year. I usually wear whatever the season dictates on the way to the airport, but always have a change of clothes in my hand luggage, also to match the season / country of destination. I also pack a pair of leggings and a warm / light weight thermal top (M&S do really good ones) and socks/travel slippers which I change into once we are in the air. You have to be comfortable for a 13/14 hour flight. Our flights are usually night flights so it also helps to be comfortable to try and get some sleep. The other thing I do is take off my makeup, again as soon as I can, and smother my face with moisturiser. I have a little makeup/moisturisers in my hand luggage for putting on before we arrive. I always gather trial sachets for this throughout the year, whenever I buy any creams or makeup. Estee Lauder are very good for this. I take facial wipes and deodorant wipes also. I know it sounds a lot to take in but so worth it. I hate arriving somewhere looking as though I have been dragged through a hedge backwards, and this way you look at least reasonable and clean. Of course this is a personal thing and there are many folk who do not bother, and who seem perfectly happy, but that isn't me. Just make sure you are going to be comfortable and warm, wearing something that you do not mind spilling anything on (which happens a lot with turbulents etc) then sit back and enjoy the flight. I hope wherever you go is all you wish for. Enjoy :)

Am waiting for the "crisp white shirt".....

JemimaPyjamas · 07/07/2022 19:35

@midsomermurderess In this case anyway, the musing about clothing is due to building excitement over GETTING OUT OF THE BLOODY COUNTRY more than anything else! Plus, talking about it is more cost effective than actually buying things!

@TopSec Thank you! I was lucky enough to get two rather posh advents* so have been putting aside a lot of it, although even if I hadn't I think I would still have plenty left now. I quite like the prospect of using 'treat' creams etc when travelling, even if in reality I can only be arsed to use the bare minimum - guess I wait and see when I am in the air.

*I bought one for myself not knowing that DH had got me one, we had decided to have 'nice Decembers' last year rather than it all being about the 25th and it felt justified ty I cafter such a few shitty years.

My usual long-haul "uniform" (cool to hot country version) is leggings, long sleeved t-shirt, loose, midi, linen dress with 3/4 sleeves, topped with a thin cashmere jumper. I carry a really thin wool wrap too. I normally wear a pair of Merrell TrailGlove trainers because they're comfy like slippers but good for walking around airports or when we arrive. I seldom wear socks anyway, especially with barefoot trainers like the Merrells.

The jumper is just for insurance and usually gets ditched soon (but always taken, even to hot, hot countries because your never know when you'll need wind/mozzie protection). Near the destination, the leggings and t-shirt get ditched and the sleeves of the dress rolled up to short -sleeve length so I'm hot country-ready to get off.

I always have a small zip bag with a Tisserand travel rollerball a tiny pot of vaseline, some hair clips, a comb, and some high sun factor BB cream to apply before landing, a dab of toothpaste and the head from an electric toothbrush, plus a plastic bag with several muslin cloths dampened with water and lavender essential oil. I use Perspirex before travelling so don't worry about carrying deodorant.

Veteran long haul flier here - usually two sequential flights of 11 - 12 hours. I always wear black straight pants (either merino or synthetic blend) with side pockets, and some stretch in them. I wear a t shirt (again with stretch, not pure cotton) and a merino jumper. I take a wrap/scarf as well in case I am chilly on the flight. Done it for years and that is my formula.

Leggings and pajama pants (ugh) are unacceptable in my view. And definitely no singlets.

Avoid pure cotton - take too long to dry, does not wick sweat away and is too heavy and uncomfortable.

Merino everything as it's miraculously cosy/cool (clever sheepies) So tshirt/top, elasticated waist joggers, large scarf/pashmina appropriate to the season travelling to. Feet - I find comfy slip on shoes best (nothing worse than faffing with laces after two long haul flights or at security checks), lovely comfy socks for relaxing. All Clothing in dark colours - because even if you manage to avoid the exploding juice/milk/child, planes are just grubby and light coloured clothing looks grimey by the time you disembark. I have a Longchamp Pilage neo and a small matching coloured cabin bag, just for travelling, themakes me feel like a grown-up traveller!

@badlydrawncat you wear a linen dress on a long haul flight?! That must be in such a state by the end. Why wouldn't you choose something that stays relatively crease free?

Op, I tend to go for loose wide legged trousers, preferably with an elasticated waist, sports bra, strappy top, t-shirt and poncho. Then I can strip off layers if I get too warm. As pp mentioned, ponchos work much better than a pashmina/scarf as you put them on and forget about them, no constant rearranging. Slip on shoes and comfy socks. Big knickers, no one wants to be dealing with a wedgie on a plane. And always pack spare underwear in hand luggage just in case your hold luggage doesn't make it

On a long haul flight, I wear comfortable and good looking joggers with a nice top and good trainers. I have a cosy sweatshirt in my hand luggage if it’s an overnight flight, as I’ll inevitably get cold. I also take a change of knickers and something lovely to change into before landing. I remove my bra when I get relaxed on a night flight and also on a long haul daytime flight if I feel the need.

AnnieSnap · 19/07/2022 22:17

Oh yes, like @satelliteheart I always pack some lightweight extra clothing in my hand luggage. Our hold luggage hasn’t arrived at our destination twice now. It’s been delivered to us within a few days and it’s nice for it not to be a big deal during that time.

Because I don't find linen creases so much as people think it does and any creases that do remain drop out by the time I'm through passport control.

I fly long-haul 3 or 4 times a year and it's something that's worked well for me over 6 or 7 years. Also, I'm usually flying into hot and humid conditions so knit fabrics or many synthetics are out. Having said that, I never travel with hold luggage so I've always got the rest of my clothes to hand if I need to change.
