Holding on to clothes

I had a massive clear out recently and I have been ruthless (for me) to make space, and west what I love.

However I am still holding onto things that I know that I won’t wear…or very unlikely to wear because I still love them and they were expensive.

is this silly? I have a daughter so I feel like I should hold onto somethings….and then things that I think ok that might come in handy for a party.

Does anyone else do this!?

If you won't wear them, the money is already wasted and you're paying in house square footage to store them.

If it's a proper inheritable piece, that's one thing, but expensive high street I won't wear gets sold in my house.

I think it depends on whether you like clothes for purely functional reasons or for their own sake. Nothing wrong with either camp but I'm in the second. I have clothes I'll almost certainly never wear again but I keep them. Sometimes it's because I think they're beautiful objects in their right (and also worth a few quid if I'm ever on my uppers). Others have little monetary value but they remind me of a great time in my life, in the same way that a photo or some books do.
You need space though - I'd have kept even more if I hadn't moved house so often.

I do this. Mainly old stuff that I keep saying would come in handy to wear to do the weeding or painting. But I couldn't never get through it all! I find it really easy to throw most stuff away and I'm not sentimental at all but I find throwing away clothes really difficult, not sure why.

I have a box of clothes that I keep for my DD (10). Anything designer or otherwise cool goes into the box. Things like band t shirts, denim jackets, leather biker jackets etc that I think have a value as “vintage”. I also have some clothes from the 90’s that I’ve kept which were my “going out” clothes back then. Bog standard high street clothes get donated.

She’s going to be inheriting some pristine Vivienne Westwood bondage boots so I hope her feet don’t grow too big.

I may feel differently if I had daughters or nieces but I have one boy and a post-vasectomy husband!

Ok- space isn’t necessarily an issue. I think I will hold on to some of the items. As I know things come back around.

I’ve kept some much loved party dresses for the DDs. Mainly those requiring self supporting boobs, which I no longer have!

I’ve also got some items which were mistakes. I ought to sell them really but know I’ll only get a fraction of the price. So I keep them, hoping they will be perfect for an unknown future occasion or lifestyle. Silly really and I should just get on and sell them.

One of my adult DCs has literally just gone out in one of my cropped T shirts and a velvet coat I bought in the 90s, and with a baguette handbag I bought in the early 2000s.

I do keep pretty much everything, a lot of it is vacuum packed. I keep all my coats, bags, shoes and jewellery (although I did have to sell some stuff a couple of years through necessity sadly) The quality of clothing in the past was a lot better, the velvet jacket is almost pristine and it was M and S, I think I bought it in 1996! I've also inherited a lot of stuff from my grandmother and mother so love the tradition of passing things down. Shamefully I feel really quite smug that the 90s are back in fashion so my DDs like my old clothes (ironically a lot of stuff I bought in the 90s was vintage 60s/70s stuff like platform shoes that became trendy again). The other day another DD was wearing a Stone Roses T shirt of mine! Apparently shrunken and faded is trendy now Grin

Ive just said in a toys/books thread I think we will have more of a circulation than consumption mindset in general. I hope so anyway.

If you have the space it's definitely worth investing in some proper storage systems and items like dry cleaner type covers for coats/suits etc. I try and keep original shoe boxes (also good in case you do decide to sell things in future).

Sorry, this is one of my favourite topics to go on and on about Grin

I'm a minimalist so no, I would sell or donate. Clutter just drags me down.

Mercurial123 · 05/07/2022 16:29

I don't keep clothes I don't wear. I find life much easier with less stuff. The clothes I have I enjoy wearing. I'm downsizing in a couple of years and moving to Brighton. My flat is tiny so it's good practice learning to live with less.
