Shampoo / Conditioner for Coloured Hair in Hard Water Area

FatCatSkinnyRat · 05/07/2022 10:01

Hi all,

I have recently moved to a very hard water area. We are saving up for a water softener but it will be many many months until we are ready to do this.

My hair is a nightmare as a result. I have read all the tips and tricks re vinegar / fairy liquid / clarifying shampoo and while they work to make my hair feel softer they really strip the colour out of my hair.

Has ANYONE found a shampoo / conditioner brand that is good for very hard water areas while still preserving colours? Am thinking I am going to have a buy a couple of different ones to switch it up.

FYI I have chestnut brown hair with a few caramel highlights just in case this makes a difference.

Thank you!

Following with interest as in an identical situation.

Could you share the vinegar/fairy liquid tips?!

I live in a hard water area and have a full head of highlights. The conditioner I always go back to is Herbal Essences Ignite my colour (pink bottle). I think everyone's hair is different though so it might not be good for everyone's hair type!

This is one of those moments where I really do think that salon quality products is necessary. I tend to switch between colour shampoo/conditioners from KMS and L'Oreal. I also use an Innolux Elixir leave in-softening conditioner a couple of times a week. My colour stays fresh and looks great long term.

I make it a bit less expensive by buying the large salon sized ones off Amazon. Much cheaper than going into a salon and buying a small bottle. Also, salon quality products last FOREVER unless your ds is being over generous with their use

Your hair will settle down after a while and get used to it, I speak from experience!

I like Tigi rehab , it's cheap on line for huge bottles.

If you want to splash out then Olaplex 3 is fantastic and you only use it now and again.

I've not used it yet but I live in a hard water area and I've been meaning to try L'Oréal metal detox range which is meant to help this problem.

Get one of those screw on shower filters. You can get them for about £20 or so on Amazon. They're brilliant.

Sorry what? There is such a thing? <heads straight to Amazon>

I use Color Wow Dream Filter. (I use several of their other products but I think the Dream Filter on its own might be worth a go given what you say)

I live in a very hard water area and use this attached to the shower head:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MWX4C3B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(loads of similar products on Amazon, take your pick)

I know it's time to change the filter when my skin starts feeling itchy.

I also use Aveda colour conserve shampoo which seems to do a good job on my dyed hair.

Yes I was referring to something like what @TartoCitronella linked to.
