Help! What do I do???

So…long story short, nobody ever showed me how to do makeup, and I was practically a boy as a teenager, so I don’t know what to do.

How do I learn the absolute basics? I daren’t trust YouTubers because I don’t know whether they will leave me looking stupid, and I don’t know where to start.

All I want is a nice and smooth complexion. I have some dry areas (forehead) and some that get a little greasy (sides of nose etc), and I do find my skin is a little sensitive (gets a little blotchy).

i would really love if some kind person could give me a list of products that I should own and would need, or tell me of a YouTuber that is right for me. Happy to answer any other questions as needed.

I’m 35, but please treat me like I am 12 and just trying makeup for the first time, really clear on the exact type of product (eg. Don’t just say moisturiser or I’ll end up with a night cream or a full body one 🙈)

sorry if I seem really demanding, I just need to feel more feminine and I know that a nice natural looking makeup could help with that…otherwise why would so many women use makeup

Hey OP. I'm a makeup Artist and honestly it would be so complicated to explain on here as there are so many steps/products and I'd need to know a few things. I'll PM you

Maybe get your skin right first ? My daughter of 18 has been going to No 7 counter in Boots where they have scanned her face and advised products to buy, you then go back for a couple of reviews and they re scan and report how your skin is.
I’ve also taken her to have her makeup done when she was younger, we booked with Benefit but you can choose a makeup counter of your choice eg at large dept store, they do your makeup and give you a list of products and you can choose what you buy.
Have fun !

For bare basics, here’s what I’d do:

  1. Wash face with water, a facecloth and a facial cleanser that preserves the skin barrier, eg I use Aveeno
  2. Moisturise face and neck with something gentle, eg I use Clinique
  3. Gently apply eye cream to the undersides of both eyes where the skin is delicate, eg I use Origins
  4. Apply Vaseline to lips
  5. Apply sunscreen to face and neck, eg I use Nivea shine control
  6. Draw eyeliner and fill in eyebrows. Look up YouTube videos on these as techniques vary a lot and it depends what you like. I just use pencils as I’m low effort and don’t want to look super polished. I think the ones I’ve got are Boots no 7
  7. For lips I use Clinique almost lipstick. This is the only STRONG recommendation in this list. It’s super low maintenance, easy to apply, you don’t need a lip pencil and you don’t even need a mirror to make it neat, it’s just a magic stick that makes your lips look amazing.
  8. Alternatively, use a Clinique chubby stick on both your lips and your cheeks. This is a really nice way of getting the colours to match and it’s so easy. Clinique tries to sell special chubby sticks for cheeks, but you don’t need them.
I don’t use foundation or BB or CC cream as I don’t like the feel on my face. I’ve taken good care of my skin so I’m not afraid to go bare.

If you’re into skincare (which I am) then put a serum before step 2. I use The Ordinary Vit C in the morning and a Dermatica prescription at night but you could also get a retinol from The Ordinary for night time.

For me, the following things are skippable:

  • Primer. Because I don’t use foundation.
  • Lip liner. Because I don’t want a super polished look and my lipsticks are amazing on their own.
  • Highlighter/bronzer. Because I just don’t like that look and can’t be bothered.
I know that it reads like a lot, but most of these steps take 15 seconds so I’m ready very quickly in the mornings.

Hope that helps!

Save up and get a consultation at a Clinique counter, tell them your budget and get recommendations.

If Clinique is too pricey go for No7 in a major boots

Pay for a lesson. I was in a similar position and it was brilliant. She gave me a whole tutorial a massive list of products that would suit me and work with my skin, showed me what to do with them and how to do it and I've never looked back. Gave me all the confidence i needed.

Thank you so much, I’ve replied. You don’t know how much this means to me…I’m having quite a hard time right now and I just need to make some changes to feel happier about myself.

thanks to the people who have replied too :)

This was really great, exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for. I had literally no idea of the steps or anything, and it’s nice to see it all written down like that.

thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. :)
