When I had to go into the office everyday I looked respectable. Now that I'm homebased, I'm sinking into a pit of the same thing all the time, unless I'm actually out on site. This is usually on a theme of long denim skirt and tshirty top.
I'd like to get some clothes that although relaxed actually look a bit more respectable - any ideas ?
Am totally hopeless at thinking about this sort of level of clothes.
I'm 35, 5'10", size 10-12, 33" leg and have a bit of a tummy. No other 'problem areas' though.

thanks HanaFlower
I'm not sure that I even have a style really - that may well be my problem. I don't do girly girly, and tend to wear solid colours rather than patterns, and virtually never sparkly. Base colours of black or dark brown - infact often all black or brown with a coloured cami showing.
Forgot to say that I'm very pale skinned with long brown/blond hair (which due to sheer laziness has a big grey streak at the front as I haven't had my highlights done for a bit)

if I was at home I wouldn't wear nice stuff

I would save it to go out in

I would be cosy and comfy

Cappuccino · 16/01/2008 13:50

who is going to see you?

cmotdibbler · 16/01/2008 13:55

Dh sees me (also home based)and the nursery staff. Thats it really.
Unfortunatly all my going out is during the day at the weekend with DS, so thats really casual for the park / soft play etc. We have no friends in the area, so never go out in the evening.
Looking tatty 5 days a week is just making me feel like an old frump.

I work at home when I choose. Also involves site visits on occasion, but quite often to muddy places.
I got completely fed up in Autumn with living in jeans, added to the fact that Gap have stopped making my favourite western bootcut jeans and I haven't found a suitable replacement and seem to be going through jeans at the knees at the rate of knots (lots of crawling after the children).
I went to FatFace and bought 3 pairs of well-cut and comofrtable trousers, which have a smart-casual vibe. I also bought a few wrap tops there and at Gap and a couple of long skirts which I wear at the moment with causal but heeled boots (1 pair from jones and 1 lovely pair in brown from M&S autograph).
I definitely find that I am more work-centric if I am wearing smarter clothes, and because I also have to do occasional hearings or trips into the office for meetings, I don't have a "what can I weeeaaarr" panic anymore.

Have a look at Great Plains - they do good smart casual clothes. But I am 5'5" and their skirts are a great length for me (the knee length ones) so am not sure if they'd do for you.

Walnutshell · 16/01/2008 14:13

Great Plains are gorgeous... sigh.

pooka · 16/01/2008 14:14

They also have excellent sales I find.

Cappuccino · 16/01/2008 14:16

when I worked at home I had a USB drive on a cord

if I put it round my neck I felt like I was working

tis odd I realise but I did

skinny (streach for comfort) and a long top? or wide leg trousers with trainers and long-sleeve/short-sleeve top?
Topshop/M&S

Walnutshell · 16/01/2008 14:25

Capp - - what are you like? I'm just going to stick a pen behind my ear for the same effect...

brimfull · 16/01/2008 14:29

hanaflower-I have that top in black bought in store, they also had green I think.

cmotdibbler · 16/01/2008 15:07

Hanaflower - love that top, will def be ordering. One of my 'issues' is finding tops that are long enough that I don't get a cold draught / display my lily white and silver stretch mark midriff.
For some reason, don't like working in jeans, but cords a good idea. Dh may scoff though !
Capp - don't need anything to make me feel like working - actually find it harder to stop, esp as work for a US based company so now get dragged into post DS bedtime Livemeetings. If I put a labcoat on (last time I had any sort of a uniform), DH might get funny ideas.......
Some great ideas for companies I hadn't thought of buying from - thank you all, and more ideas very very welcome.

I dug out my old work clothes (I work p/t from home) and wear my old (very very smart) work trousers with eg cashmere tops, shirts etc most of the time now. I feel much better for making the effort and it puts me in a work frame of mind. Even if I've awarded myself the day off I generally try to look smart. I usually wear jeans at the weekend.

Making a little bit of effort will make you feel so much better.

cardy · 16/01/2008 16:28

it nice to have different clothes for work, I'd get fed-up in the same sort of clothes all the time.

CurrantBun · 17/01/2008 15:48

This is very topical for me too. Although I'm back at work part-time and am just getting round to sorting out my work wardrobe, I still need to sort out an 'at home' look that doesn't make me feel frumpy or scruffy.

I live in my jeans, but they've now got to the point where they go baggy even after washing and I refuse to wear my smart ones (exactly the same jeans as my scruffy ones, just newer and reserved for going out) indoors. Think I might get another pair and ditch the old ones. I'm also still wearing the small, fitted v-necks I wore a couple of years ago (didn't wear them last year as was pregnant) but with repeated washing, they have shrunk and now ride up at the waist even with a cami underneath. Am fed up with yanking them back down. Also need new boots as mine have had it, but need something brown, mid-heel (can't do flat as I'm 5'1" and need at least 2" heel to make sure my jeans don't drag along the pavement) and preferably nubuck as don't like shiny leather - but can't find anything! Also want a smart but casual jacket to wear with jeans.

I do always wear make-up even if I'm staying at home, and I always wash and blow-dry my hair. Just need to make myself feel better.
