Nail varnish remover - what’s happened to it?

RoofFlower · 02/07/2022 12:22

Just bought some new nail varnish remover as my old bottle ran out and it’s rubbish. So I bought another type and that’s rubbish too.
Only cheap brands to be fair but that’s all I’ve ever used but I’m having to rub for ages to get the nail varnish off! Can anyone recommend a brand that doesn’t take 30 minutes to get your nail varnish off?

I just peel my nail varnish off in the shower 🤷😅

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 06/07/2022 17:45

Cutex gets my nail varnish off pretty well but, no matter what formulation, I find them all very drying, on both my nails and skin. No matter what, though, I'd avoid pure acetone. Way, way too harsh.

Not really. £3 for 250ml from Superdrug is cheaper that when I buy acetone for removing actual gel nails.

I paid £4 for 500ml of pure acetone a few months back from Sally's.

Make sure you buy acetone nail varnish remover. Alternatively, last week on holiday, I found spray sun tan lotion removed my nail varnish instantly.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 06/07/2022 20:24

I buy the tubs that you stick your nails in, the Nails Inc one is the best.

I actually remember my mother calling it nail lacquer .

Ragwort · 06/07/2022 23:30

Interesting... I've also noticed this recently.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/07/2022 07:20

When did it become nail polish? Always varnish for us.

Heytheredeliah · 07/07/2022 13:04

I have noticed this too. My nail varnish remover doesn't remove nail varnish as easily as it used to. I seem to have to scrub at my nails for any varnish to be removed. Strange one.

If you buy acetone rather than nail polish remover, you should be OK. I think the issue is that polish remover is gentler, whereas acetone is what's used to remove gel. Although I'm pretty sure 20 years or so ago, it was all acetone. That's what I buy (from Poundland or Tesco) and it works.

ZimZamZoom · 07/07/2022 14:46

Another one who has always called it nail varnish here!

I use the Elegant Touch pads in the little pot and I always hold them on to each nail for 30 seconds before starting to wipe. Seems to do the trick.
Like PPs have said, I think this problem is down to nail varnishes becoming better quality, rather then the remover becoming worse.
I do avoid glitter now though because I cba with the amount of time it takes to remove.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/07/2022 17:32

When did it become nail 'varnish'? Wtf is that? It is nail polish for the rest of the English-speaking western world**

Gosh so hostile! Clearly not as a couple of us are used to 'varnish'.

Nail varnish here. In the western world. As an English speaker.

Wft are you on about with your wtf?

MadisonAvenue · 07/07/2022 21:20

I’ve always called it nail varnish too.

GoodVibesHere · 07/07/2022 21:58

Nail varnish here too!

hillbillyannie · 07/07/2022 22:44

Another vote for the removal pads in the little tub. Got my gel polished toenails sorted in a minute yesterday. I did the toenails myself BTW hate pedicures ugh.

TreacheryPepper · 07/07/2022 22:54

Nail varnish here too!

WitchWithoutChips · 07/07/2022 23:06

Nail varnish is BrE, nail polish AmE.

A timely thread - I used some acetone-free remover last weekend. I was too lazy to use my usual foil wrap method and now the pads of my index fingers are peeling horribly. It’s really unpleasant. Foil wraps are by far the simplest way to remove glitters in particular.

eurochick · 07/07/2022 23:18

I've noticed the recent use of nail polish in the U.k. it always used to be nail varnish. It's another American import. It's not one I mind particularly though. Nail paint would be more accurate than either!

FrangipaniBlue · 07/07/2022 23:32

I've noticed that more and more shops only sell the acetone free versions and it's not always immediately obvious that they are acetone free!

marigoldflower · 08/07/2022 00:03

I use this one from Superdrugs

www.superdrug.com/make-up/nails/nail-accessories/nail-polish-remover/superdrug-nourishing-nail-polish-remover/p/813129

I bought it a couple of years ago and still works fine. I haven't got a new bottle recently though

Firstinlastout · 08/07/2022 00:22

I use the Lidl one ,I'm sure it's under a pound. You can get acetone free or acetone one.I always use the acetone one.Its really good, always removed mine no problem.
I've got a really thick polish ,I think it's called graffiti effect or something,it's like a matt glitter with bits in,that you kind of just splodge on. It's always been good at removing that and that's really hard to get off.

RoofFlower · 14/07/2022 11:43

I just bought cutex ultra powerful and it works a treat. Not that much more expensive as well.
