I have a black silk Moschino vintage dress
Or a silk floral dress that is see through and could be worn with a slip?

All my o the we clothes are too big as I have lost 3 stone in weight.

Black seems wrong for a summer graduation but the dress looks so nice on. I could have more summery accessories?

The floral one looks better in than hanging up

Black dress with white jacket? Or cardi?

I'd go for the floral one, it's gorgeous. The black one looks more like a party dress to me.

dreamingofsun · 02/07/2022 09:09

agree floral one or buy new. black looks like party dress.....on saying that at one of my kids graduations some of the mothers looked as if they had been clubbing all night and come along after! wear flat or comfy shoes as there is lots of walking/standing up

leli · 02/07/2022 09:29

Love the floral dress. Black too night-time, though looks lovely too.

Congrats on the weight loss.

luckylavender · 02/07/2022 17:58

I like the black one much better. You could make it look less 'evening' with pops of colour. Jewellery / shoes / handbag / pashmina / nail polish

SkeletonFight · 02/07/2022 21:28

I love the floral. People really don't dress up for graduations. I was shocked at how sloppy some people were.

Sqeebling · 03/07/2022 00:15

People most definitely do dress up for graduation 👩‍🎓

Go for the floral dress as it'll be daytime and it's nice cheery but I do very much like the black dress.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/07/2022 00:18

Floral

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/07/2022 00:46

This is going to sound weird but I would go for something longer. Mid calf. Something less 'night out'.

Of the two, the floral.

Don't know which university you are referring to. At my graduation in 1981 ( historic university) people were wearing what would have been smart office wear. At my son's at the same university several decades later people were wearing what you would wear to a wedding.

For the OP- the floral

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 03/07/2022 11:39

I'm aiming for bit more than Sunday best and not quite weddingy.

Mumwithbaggage · 03/07/2022 12:13

Which university? I love the black one - floral's a bit predictable. I've seen all sorts of different styles at different types of graduations. And I'm always a fan of wear what you love because you'll have a happier day.

namechanged221 · 03/07/2022 15:46

Thanks all!

Yes I thought the black is a bit evening-y though it is lovely!

The floral dress comes to mid calf on me as I'm smalll. I'll probably go for that with white sandals or heels? Or I have silver sandals too?

It's at the University of York...

We have the graduation at 2pm then photos!.... and I've booked a table at a gorgeous french restaurant for after that... then we are staying in a hotel overnight!

I'm very excited!!

Thanks xx

My son graduated from York earlier this year (delayed covid graduation) and people definitely dressed up.

The floral dress is perfect and the black although lovely is more of a party dress.

I'd go with white rather than silver shoes but a word of warning, there was a LOT of walking and I struggled in my heels. I would have gone for a lower mid heel if I had known.

namechanged221 · 03/07/2022 16:29

Thank you @RubiesandRose, I had imagined it might be!

If it was your graduation I'd say the black because it's stunning. But I think if I wore something like that to my son's event, I'd spend the day feeling slightly anxious in case it was OTT, and looking over my shoulder at everyone else's outfit. So I'm going to go for the floral, because it's lovely and will also leave you free to relax and enjoy your son's the day knowing you've got the look nailed. I'm quite sure that, given the circumstances, most people will dress the hell up. Hope you have a wonderful day.

crosstalk · 03/07/2022 17:05

Floral, especially for photos if he's wearing a black university gown otherwise you could look like a large black block with your DS.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 03/07/2022 17:22

I don't think either are quite right. Both perfectly nice dresses but not for a graduation.

All the pictures I've seen of parents at a graduation ceremony are more Sunday best, with a jacket type outfits. Both of your choices look like you're going to a party.

daisypond · 03/07/2022 17:29

Floral. I went to DD’s graduation and people didn’t particularly dress up, so don’t go too dressy. I wore smart trousers and a silk shirt and jumper - smart office wear sort of look.

Paq · 03/07/2022 17:39

Floral is lovely. Black will just melt into his gown.

namechanged221 · 03/07/2022 18:05

@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn
I could wear it with a jacket? I'm a bit short on options as most of my clothes are too big for me since losing a lot of weight.

What colour jacket would work?

Or could you suggest another dress?

I'm tempted to go to John Lewis and get something new...

I think you deserve something new as you've done so well losing weight 😊

namechanged221 · 03/07/2022 20:50

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor thank you!

Tbh I like neither. Definitely not the black though, floral is more in the spirit of it. Think more like a chic garden party. Not too sexy, nor evening. Ted Baker has some nice long floral or summery dresses on sale now. www.tedbaker.com/uk/c/womens/clothing/dresses/389
