Facial hair😑

Ratched · 01/07/2022 19:53

I am 'of a certain age' and sprouting facial hair.
I usd to find Miriam Margoyles amusing on the subject, but now feeling like I need to bloody shave daily to avoid the dreaded whiskers.
I have a 'no-no' which has worked so far, but what is a better solution?
I need the obvious to you answers because I'm not self care inclined, so electrolysis, threading(?) and epilation(again ? , think that's right) are just like a foreign language to me - I've heard of them, but don't know the ins and outs.

Recommendations please?
Quick version:
I have whiskers, what can I do to get rid of them permanently ?

Thank you!

You could go for threading, or DIY from a YouTube tutorial.

Or an epilator, one you can use in the shower would be my recommendation

Both smart a bit (a lot) at first, but you soon get used to it

Short answer: Permanently only with electrolysis! Don't jump on the IPL bandwagon.
Long answer: IPL didn't work on my whiskers, they're back, though not as strong after 5-ish years so I won't recommend as the point is they are back!
Everything else means doing it routinely, among those waxing lasts the most for me (I use cold wax strips because I'm lazy and hot wax is too much for my sensitive skin), epilating's next (provided it's a good epilator) and, when I'm desperate for time, shaving but I wouldn't recommend. Sometimes I also bleach them, as I think it makes them less noticeable if they're not too long.
Is there a country where a woman can be proud to be hairy?... I might move there or to a tropical forest in Congo, I think gorillas would see me as one of their one and welcome into the tribe!

Electrolysis is meant to be permanent and I sang its praises while I was getting it done but after 2 years I fell pregnant and had to stop, then covid hit, not been back since and my beard has restarted. Wax it off myself now at home, veet cold wax strips do the trick

What's your colouring? Darker skin and blonde or white hair can't have IPL. So electrolysis would be better and gives permanent results. Obviously if trans women can successfully remove their beards by this method, I am sure you can too!

People have mixed results with IPL in any event. Sometimes it can make hair growth worse so make sure you do your research.

There are home IPL machines which are hundreds and don't work very well in my experience.

You could wax / sugar / thread. They work the same way - ripping skin out at the root. This would be moderately pricy and widely available. Issue is you have to grow out the hair to a certain length before you go so that the hair can stick / grab on.

You can wax and sugar at home cheaply. Strips available at boots or supermarket. Threading I think some people can do at home but I've never tried.

There is plucking yourself at home. Basically free and can be done whenever. You can pick up one of these super cheap springs which plucks the hair at home a bit faster than a normal tweezer... hairremovaldevicetips.com/spring-epilator/

You can continue shaving. Totally an option. Get a decent razor and some good shaving cream.

You can use hair removal cream. This may cause a reaction on sensitive skin but worth considering.

Some people don't remove facial hair they just bleach it with jolen crème to disguise it. This depends on your skin tone.

I think that's all of the options?

(Can you tell I have a beard????)

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Really useful info from everyone, thank you!
I don't have a lot of hair I'm not beardy, I just have foot long whiskers that appear overnight ( might be a slight exaggeration)!
I have a chinny chin chin extra strong inch long whisker I quite like fiddling with while I'm pondering stuff, but they are sprouting up everywhere now.
I think I will give cold wax strios a try to start with.

If you hear screams and cursing MN sometime today, you'll know who is is😅

If you are going to was apply the strip in the same direction the hair lies, hold the skin tight with your other hand, take a deep breath and rip it off in the opposite direction.

If you don’t hold the skin tight and rip it off quickly it’s much more painful and you can get bruises.

I use these. They’re only a few pounds and very portable. I usually use it after I’ve dried my face post shower - a quick go every few days seems to do the job. They will still like plucking/waxing though.

Sorry - meant to say it will still feel like plucking/waxing.

I'm afraid that the the bad news that electrolysis is NOT actually permanent for everyone. I had my annoying chin hairs removed with electrolysis about 10 years ago. They are now making a very unwelcome return - possibly due the menopause though.

They will be new follicles which have become "terminal hairs" as opposed to thin whisky hairs.

Obv electrolysis can't stop you developing new hairs with age/ hormonal changes / pregnancy.

The old follicles that were treated ten years ago will still be dead.

I've got one of those JML whatsits and it's great. It cost £20, i think.

I can't remember what they're called, but they're quick, painless, doesn't cause redness and has a little light on it.
I use it on my upper lip, too.
