Makeup trends

Can someone please tell me what sort of eyemakeup is fashionable at the moment? Also could someone please show me some photos so that I can understand the difference between matte and dewy skin and explain to me which one is bad right now? Thanks.

Also I'm 40 and fat so I'm completely unfashionable anyway, I'm just interested.

Do a search on matt vs dewy skin. Both are ok but the trend now is for dewy

April90 · 30/06/2022 16:33

Don't go with what eyemakeup is fashionable go with what suits your eye colour/shape.
Dewy skin is in but my skin is really oily so I have to be careful what I use. Like I said go with what suits you.

There are all sorts of trends flying around at the moment, some of which are polar opposites. E.g. thick OTT eyebrows are still in, while some are moving back to thin 90’s brows. Some people are still caking themselves in foundation/contouring while others are minimalist/sheer.

It’s all about what suits your own preferences. I’m personally embracing the casual no-makeup “trend” and focusing on good skincare and SPF so I’m not afraid to go bare.

Mrcpy · 30/06/2022 16:42

I’m not a fan of “dewy” because it’s a thin line between that and looking sweaty/greasy 😅

isthismylifenow · 30/06/2022 16:50

I don't know if it's in or not, but at age 52 I look a lot better with minimal make up believe it or not, with no eyeliner. Just tightline the top lid. Bit a natural eye shadow if the day calls for it, and mascara. I use a more dewy foundation but my skin is dry. You need to find what is rather for you rather than follow a trend...

I tend towards greasy so I suspect dewy isn't for me. I rarely wear makeup and sometimes even out my skin tone with a bit of No 7 BB cream for oily skin, which I just discovered was discontinued at least a year ago if not more.

Does anyone still wear eyeshadow? What colour? I love the really heavy glitter eyeshadow but I would look ridiculous.

Eyebrows - I've had roughly the same shape natural eyebrows since 1995 and I don't intend to do much about them, other than fill them in a bit where some have started to go grey 😫

And eyeliner? I'm guessing the old Kate Middleton style eyeliner is very out. Or maybe it has cycled round to being back on trend again.

Fashionable is suc a wide scope, personally I think the glossy look is the best. So velvet or dewy skin, cream blush and a lovely smudgy eyeshadow like the By Terry ombre black star.

Eyeshadow - I don’t, but the OTT glitter eyeshadow is indeed on trend a la Euphoria, so go for it!

Eyeliner - has a tendency to make people look old. I’d do just the top lid, or nothing.

When it comes to makeup there's no such thing as bad or good. Some things will look better on you than others and only you can know what those are when you look in the mirror. When you look in the mirror you should say Wow, that's me? I look fab! It's impossible to say buy this or get that without seeing you or knowing stuff about you: do you want posh makeup? any allergies? fast and easy? do you have tools? do you want to buy tools? do you want to look like you but improved? or look like a Greek Goddess? oily skin? dry skin? want to hide sth? etc etc etc
Makeup brands keep churning out weird colours and textures because they have to sell something people don't have, otherwise they'd go broke! Start with the basics and then build into quirky or unusual.
Go to MAC for foundation: get samples and test them at home. Put one on, then pick a window with lots of light and have a look in a mirror, wear it all day long with your regular skincare. One of those foundations will make you look better in your eyes from morning till dusk - that's likely the one. Get another sample and test it again. If you feel the same get that one OR go online and google other brands equivalent to your MAC shade.
Go to several counters and find out whether you're warm or cold. Then go online and start with that: e.g blonde + warm + NC20 (MAC shade) + eye makeup or lipstick or makeup.

SmileyPiuPiu · 01/07/2022 06:34

Personally I would go for the make up you love.

Went off talking abot foundation (you didn't ask anyhitng about!) and forgot to say the the most important part about eye makeup (in my subjectiver personal opinion) is to figure out your eye shape!
My eyes are small, really deep-set (which isn't that common) and I have low brows and not a lot of lid real estate. I spent years trying to copy what I saw online and in magazines and in the end I spent years wearing mostly a beige eyeshadow with a black eyeliner because I couldn't make anything work! I thought I didn't have it in me to do my eyes but the moment I realised I have deep-set & small eyes was my road to Damascus moment: I wasn't doing it properly, I can't copy exactly what I see on a celeb that looks nothing like me.
I also looked for celebs who have an eye shape similar to mine, in my case I can remember Kirsten Dunst (before she had a brow lift) & Eva Green.

Smurftastic · 01/07/2022 11:23

@Oceanus Do you mind sharing your tips for deep set, small eyes? Mine are like that, plus I wear glasses. It's not been easy to figure out what to do with them 🤔

Oceanus · 01/07/2022 12:54

@Smurftastic It's hard to share tips on this! I read a lot and I found it hard to visualise tbh it's much better to watch videos so you can pause and copy! Have a look at Wayne Goss (my favourite) on youtube. I also find a lot of the tips for hooded eyes work for me too, though with a bit of tweaking. Overall I stick to:

  • avoid pitch black eyeshadow and very dark looks.

  • add an highlighting eyeshadow in the inner corner

  • I don't put eyeshadow on the crease (it would end up hidden) but right above (super tip: I always do all eye makeup it with my eyes open, it's really important for our eye shape)

  • I avoid glitter (because it always ends up bungled up in the crease), I favour matte but I also like satin and shimmer

  • I always conceal/correct dark circles

  • With eyeliner: I start really fine about the middle of eyelid and then I thicken it but not too much. I try to pull eyeliner up instead of doing it horizontally.

  • I dab a bit of beige (the shade would depend on your skin tone obviously) matte eyeshadow under the brown bone.

  • The final tip I can think of, which will likely make you laugh, is smaller brushes. Really, I spent my whole life using massive brushes when my eyelid's small, then I bought a couple of travel ones (they're exactly the same but a bit smaller) and it was like "why didn't I know this?!"! It's a lot easier for placing shadow only where it's supposed to go.

  • I always curl my shadows and use waterproof mascara, otherwise it all smudges as they touch the skin at the top, above the crease.

  • I favour eyeshadow as eyeliner now because I've got wrinkles and it's more forgiving. I love gel eyeliner from BB before and then I'd smuge it for a smokey eye.

  • A tip I've seen everywhere is to use the mid-toned eyeshadow from eyelid below the lower lashes. I do this sometimes but only MAC Haux. Other shades end up making my eyes look darker and smaller so take this one with a pinch of salt.

  • I never put dark eyeliner on the bottom waterline. I have a nude pencil (for when I can be bothered).

  • I tightline my upper lashes but only near the outter corner or it can smudge. This makes my lashes look fuller but without overloading the lid. that way I've got more room there for regular eyeshadow.

  • I often use a darker shade on the outter V (it doesn't extend outside the length of the brow)

  • I often dab a bit of hightlighting shadow in the middle of the lid.

Smurftastic · 01/07/2022 14:02

@Oceanus
Oh wow thank you so much! I'm going to copy your comment and keep it in a folder with my beauty inspo.
Frankly I've just been using statement lipsticks as my lips are ok, but I have virtually no upper eyelid to play with. It would be nice to be able to use some eye makeup without it all disappearing!

Oceanus · 01/07/2022 14:23

@Smurftastic My whole life I was a lipstick and eyeliner person too! All of the sudden I find out I have deep-set eyes and then it all fell into place! Most bloggers have massive eyes and they draw their eyebrows up on the forehead or they've been surgically lifted so it's impossible to copy.
Something else, note really a tip per se but a recommendation for a product: Inglot Duraline, you mix it with regular eyeshadow and it turns into a waterproof eyeliner, that way you can add a bit of colour via the eyeliner. MAC Fix+ on the lid over the eyeshadow makes it took more blended and it'll hold better instead of smudging so much closer to the crease.

Oceanus · 01/07/2022 14:27

A tip I've seen everywhere is to use the mid-toned eyeshadow from eyelid below the lower lashes.
Line closer to the outter corner, not all the way in as it closes the eye, and not on the waterline but under the lashes. And blend away!

Deathraystare · 03/07/2022 17:11

@AmbushedByCake

Well instead of glittery eye shadow, have you tried a bit of glittery eyeliner??

I do occasionally use slightly glittery/more sheeney shadows.

I am 62 now and not about to give up make up though I am too lazy most mornings to put on foundation. I need to wear eyeliner and mascara or my eyes disappear, but just lately my emphasis has been on 'loud' lipstick. Possibly a waste of time when I am still wearing a mask but it comes off when I am eating (the mask I mean). I am wearing an old Dior one today called Gypsy Red - a very dark red - almost a brown but not a brown, as brown lipstick is not for me. I also have quite a collection of corals and reds.

I do use BB and Cc's. I also use Heck of a blot powder by Soap and Glory on my oily bits. Don't mind a glow on my cheeks but not on my forehead and nose and chin!
