Nails - recovery after shellac

LaFlottes · 27/06/2022 16:25

I’ve had shellac on my nails for a few months - going back to the nail salon every couple of weeks.

I realised that this is actually damaging my nails so have had it removed and no more applied!

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good product to help my nails recover but also keep them looking nice and not bare?

Thanks!

I like almond or olive oil and Sally Hansen Hard as Nails. I agree shellac messes your nails up- I only do it twice a year for that reason.

I’ve had the best results with OPI Nail Envy. They also do coloured and clear matt versions, but it works as a base coat.

Ditto Nail Envy - the Hawaiian Orchid is an inoffensive matte pink that covers the damage as it grows out. Mine were an awful state, so thin and sore.

Now if I want something to last a bit longer, I use Essie gel couture. It stays glossy and chip-free on toenails until you want to change it like gel but comes off immediately with regular remover and there's no damage. It was the best of the many alternatives I tried and is regularly on buy one get one half price at assorted online pharmacies etc.

I find you just have to wait for it to grow out.

Thank you! I have ordered some almond oil and will invest in some Nail Envy - thank you for the colour recommendation too.

The Essie gel couture sounds ideal for in a while when they have recovered. I do love that glossy gel look and regular varnish just chips so fast!

I hadn’t realised how much damage I was doing to my nails, especially with how the shellac was being removed - they grow quite fast luckily as I agree in many ways I have to wait and let them grow but trying to make the best of how they are now!!
