What is it with this awful fabric that's everywhere

This really tacky looking fabric that reminds me of Crimplene is everywhere at the moment. I can't believe anyone would buy it. It looks so cheap and tacky.

Just why?

I like the feel of that fabric. I don’t own a single item made of it but I don’t think it’s terrible.

Cheap nasty sweaty plastic, I suspect that one wash and its fit only for the (recycling) bin.

I do wonder if its a fire hazard? Looks like it would shrivel up at a sniff of a match!
