Elasticated arm hems

Does anyone else find these so unflattering and uncomfortable? I used to snip the elastics out but have found that they are often sewn in. I understand the practical application of creating the bubble sleeve look but would like the choice!

Yes! I hate them! And so many tops have them currently.

Elasticated arm hens ... I need to stop cancelling my eye test!

I just cut through them, even when they are sewn in. I don't actually remove them. it does make a tiny hole in the fabric though.

I do this too! It leaves them still with a gathered look but not uncomfortable

Yes and the sleeves are always too tight, I mean really why? I am buying a size 14 top for a reason…

I snip through them too, if you do it from the back next to the seam it’s not too noticeable.

They are so uncomfortable to wear - too tight and restricting. So many lovely dresses ruined by ridiculous sleeves this year!

In the last couple dresses I've bought they have overlocked the elastic in though 😮‍💨

As in, they sew all around through the elastic. I've attached a pic; you can see where I've tried to snip (this one doesn't have the overlocking as well like some do)

Glad to see it isn't just me who hates these puckered bulging monstrosities. I would imagine, seeing as it is most of the high street (from low to high) that they're saving money somewhere, Ive simply quit buying viscose at this point as well as polyester, unless it's workout/hiking gear. SO many lovely designs are ruined with these sleeves, not to mention the ludicrously high, choking necklines and ghastly florals.

If you know someone who sews, maybe you could cut the cuff close to the elasticated bit, create a new hem and thread new elastic through, as loose as you like. Or gather the raw edges and make a thin cuff out of contrasting fabric as loose as you want it and enclose the raw, gathered edges. That’s what I would do though it may be a little bit of a faff!

I dislike this too. I had them on a nightdress. All fine until you needed to push the sleeves up to elbow .

I use a stitch ripper and at evenly-ish spaced intervals break the elastic. You might end up needing to do the lot, but you don't want it too loose and be unable to undo it either. It makes it much looser and doesn't tear the fabric.

ManxRhyme · 25/06/2022 12:58

I had these. And I hate the elastic on the shorter dress sleeves too. Only flattering if you have the skinny arms of an adolescent. My arms are toned but even so it's too tight in these sleeves even if the rest of the dress fits perfectly.
