Wrap dress tips/hacks

Help needed!

Have bought this dress

www.dancingleopard.co.uk/products/olivera-midi-dress-in-dotty-purple-on-green

I love the pattern, colour and material but just not sure about the fit and hoping that how I tie it up might help. So how do you tie a wrap dress so it doesn't gape at the front? Tying really tight seems to make it a bit baggy/weird under where the tie is.

I have two sizes so hopefully I can make it work!

It’s lovely. I don’t think you can stop it from opening at the front. Just wear substantial undies (slip and vest)

I safety pin the underneath wrap to my bra and then fold the other wrap over it. I always wrap the ties around my waist before tying them too. Keeps everything in place so I never need a slip underneath

This is the style of wrap dresses although if I find on my wrap dresses the gap is too revealing I wear gym shorts underneath

namechangedyetagain · 23/06/2022 20:36

Lovely dress!

Dspx · 23/06/2022 20:38

If it's the chest area you are worried about I always put a small stitch in where it meets at the top to stop that happening. I'm quite big chested but love the wrap style x

RampantIvy · 23/06/2022 20:56

That is a lovely dress. Does it gape a lot, especially if you aren't curvy?

Oceanus · 23/06/2022 21:19

That's a lovely dress! If you've got the right number it shouldn't gap terribly at the front imho. Usually wrap dresses adjust to you as you can tie them looser or tighter.
You can tie them at the front, on the side or even at the back, depending on the length of the cord and how you prefer it, there's no right or wrong here!
If it's really baggy at the front you probably need a smaller number. Though, yours is made of poliester (zero stretch) so it might look baggy due to the shape and that's not sth you can change...
Still, that's one lovely dress! If you're worried about the boobs sticking out, wear a sleevess vest top inside, I usually do that with my wrap dresses.

I wear a uniqlo cami with a built-in bra under wrap dressed

familyissues12345 · 23/06/2022 21:41

Ooh love that, bargain too!

Meredusoleil · 23/06/2022 21:56

I always wear a vest top underneath, just in case.

piefacedClique · 23/06/2022 22:00

Have you seen the dlsb videos of tying wrap dresses? I find them brilliant. I have the same dress but in the floral ditsy pattern x

OP, what the heck were you thinking posting the address for your dress?! Now, I can't unsee it. I don't need to buy dresses but these are so bloody lovely! Gosh, those maxis... I'm a sucker for these! Oh and they deliver to my country! 😓😱😰🤔

SeaRabbit · 23/06/2022 22:46

That does look nice on the model. The thing is...

Wrap dresses and skirts look lovely on models but in my life I have seen them flare up fashion-wise so many times. And then disappear quickly.

This is because they have a lot of difficulties- when you walk they flap about and in a bit of wind they threaten to flap up so you have to hold onto them. You'd see lots of women desperately holding their skirts. You sit down and you flash your knickers if you're not careful and not many people can wear a wrap dress because they flash their boobs as well. All in all, it's not relaxing wearing a wrap dress. But they must be cheap to make.

I've got a couple wrap dresses and skirts now, have had quite a few more over the years and that was never a problem. You can use a slip skirt underneath, personally I have 2 or 3 in different colours if a dress is too revealing. There's no need to go around showing anyone my knickers!

Lockdownmummy · 23/06/2022 23:16

Sorry @Oceanus!!

It's a boob gape rather than the bottom half. I've got more going on up top (as well as everywhere else 🙈😂) than the model.

Will try a safety pin to the bra as a possible solution.

Use tit tape.

toucaninjapan · 24/06/2022 11:54

You can use fashion tape or Uniqlo's cami with built-in bra (I've personally ditched all my bras and only wear those, they are so comfy)

Oceanus · 24/06/2022 12:06

Lockdownmummy I no longer have a boobs problem since getting a breat reduction -best decision ever!- but I used to back in the day. If your boobs are that big a safety pin will likely destroy the fabric in the long run. I'd go for a top instead of putting a safety pin through poliester, otherwise you'll ruin that lovely dress of yours.

Anytimeiseeit · 24/06/2022 14:54

I always think that a visible vest top or modesty panel etc ruins the look of the v neck of a wrap dress, looks like an apology almost. So I’d look to tit tape as a better option or the pinning one side to the bra
