Clothes or eating out?

Would you rather spend your money on eating out or on expensive clothes?

Second hand clothes and eating out but not so often

Clarice99 · 23/06/2022 12:04

Clothes. Vintage and/or good quality clothes, not high street stuff.

If it was just me, clothes. But nice meals out are something I do with friends and family, so I don't want to say "can we go to Maccy Ds instead of Le Gavroche for our wedding anniversary because I fancy a pair of Louboutins?"

Floisme · 23/06/2022 13:37

Ok if you held a gun to my head, I'd choose eating out because that's how I meet up with my family and friends, plus I'd only need one great outfit to see me through loads of meals.

But I'd prioritise clothes over lots of other luxuries e.g.
Cosmetics
Beauty treatments (apart from hair)
New phone or laptop or anything techy
Booze
Cake (but not chocolate)

Interesting post.

My monthly personal spend does not cover socialising and purchasing clothes. If I do not socialise, it is pretty pointless buying clothes just to wear to the office. I have enough clothes to see me through summer and winter, however I would happily buy more. I really need to keep away from Sezane, Hush, French Connection websites as they have a good and expensive summer selection. I like the idea of changing my look (preppy, bohemian, chic) but a limited budget does not give you an opportunity to do so.

My socialising is cheap and cheerful, £25 for main course and glass of wine. If things are extra tight, I will forego the meal and meet friends for one/two drinks afterwards.

Probably clothes but only up to a point. I don’t buy clothes for the sake of it, I have a list of specific things I’m after. And you do need a nice outfit to wear to those restaurants 😆

DarlingBoy · 23/06/2022 14:07

Clothes because their pleasure lasts longer than food. Sometimes I don't like the food, I can't return it without fuss and get a refund unlike clothes where I know exactly what I'm getting and can try them first. I can resell clothes or donate them. I suppose I could donate a doggy bag for a homeless person, but really... it's clothes all day and jewellery and shoes more specifically.

DarlingBoy · 23/06/2022 14:09

When I eat I like to be quiet otherwise I swallow air and my food goes cold. I also seem to lose my appetite around people as chatting is too distracting. I hate sitting around a table at pub or restaurant where we chat endlessly. My legs get numb and I get restless so eating out with others isn't joyful to me.. I prefer to eat alone or with people who understand and like being quiet to focus on the food.

Eating out

BluebellField · 23/06/2022 14:10

Eating out. As long as you have a few nice outfits, you'll always have something to wear when you go out.

violetsanddaisies · 23/06/2022 14:11

Clothes definitely. I'm generally much more likely to spend on 'things' rather than experiences because I think of the value for money over time so I might wear a dress 20 times vs. a meal is obviously a one-time thing, however lovely it may be.

Dancefever · 23/06/2022 15:44

Much prefer clothes.

Mercurial123 · 23/06/2022 15:46

As much as I love eating, clothes come first.

Eating out

Octopus47 · 23/06/2022 17:48

Eating out. That said I am able to do both to some extent cause the clothes I like are usually cheapish (River Island is probably top end for me and I generally only go in the sales). Also I love eating out, but again I dont have expensive tastes,

BobbinHood · 23/06/2022 17:59

Eating.

However, I think I’d be more into clothes if I hadn’t prioritised eating and got so fat, so it’s a vicious circle. There’s only so excited you can get about anything that’s available in a size 20.

Good choice

I get joy from eating nice food

Also like the experience and memories of it if sharing with friends and family

It's more than just a meal
