I'm an oil slick, are there any powders out there that work?!

I have oily skin and I'm finding myself reapplying my translucent powder about 7 times a day, I'm completely sick of it.

Are there any translucent powders out there that actually last all day, or even half a day?

I live in a hot country so I'm sure that contributes, but anything better than my Avene one would be wonderful!

I think you need to take a step back and try and stop your skin being so oily rather than mopping up the oil once it’s produced

I used to have oily skin and saw someone at Dermatalogica who gave me the double cleansing stuff then clear water moisturiser. I find now that I only need to powder once in the morning then no need to reapply during the day.

My issue used to be not to moisturise enough which would make my skin feel oily and tight. I now also use tretenoin which I think really helps too

That's the thing, my skincare routine seems absolutely fine. I received advice a while ago and chose my products accordingly, all from La Roche Posay or Avène. My skin is clear and other than it getting oily, there are literally no issues so I'm loathe to spend a bunch more money on a new skincare routine.

Cetaphil oily skin cleanser is amazing & I use Mac mineralize skin finish natural powder.

I use Azelaic acid, in my case Finacea, and it has tamed the oil beautifully. Plus it’s a great make up base.

Have you tried blotting papers? I use them to soak up the oil before touching my make up up so it lasts longer and doesn't end up cakey

I read somewhere that perversely that drinking more water helps? Kind of your body is trying to moisturise itself??

Paula's choice 2% BHA works really well for me but I am an oil slick for about a week as it flushed out the pores.

It’s going to sound counterproductive but my skin is much less oily when I use a facial oil. The same as a PP, I wasn’t moisturising enough. The best face powder I’ve come across is Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder to actually battle the shine.

I find Glossier Wowder good. Looks almost invisible, and lasts well. It doesn't quite do all day for me, so I top it up if I'm going out in the evening.

Have you tried oil blotting paper instead? They remove oil but leave your make-up in place. Muji's are very effective:

There are other types on the market - search facial oil blotting paper or oil absorbent sheets. Some include power (which I'd avoid) and I prefer paper over plastic sheets.

What other makeup do you wear as well? Prep is so important re skincare etc. but for example Huda Beauty is formulated to withstand hot climates such as Dubai so you may want to look into their products.

You May also want to embrace the ‘dew’ too by wearing cream makeup products so you look glowy.

I find excess shine looks worse and much more obvious if I wear foundation. If I just wear a dusting tinted pressed powder I am less shiny. If I want any concealer I use a mineral powder one. Blurring cream is also good, I use Nanoblur.

Grenouilledesjardins · 23/06/2022 14:00

I don't really wear makeup, not in summer. Right now I only have mascara and a tiny bit of bronzer on. I removed the translucent powder I put on this morning cause it was feeling unbearable!

My skin is fairly oily.
So I cleanse then use Clinique no2 Clarifying Lotion as a toner.
I apply some Clinique smart repair serum then either Boots Intense Protect & Perfect spf15 day cream (if I'm indoors working) or Boots Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Facial Sun Protection spf50 if mostly outside.

Then I apply Smashbox Photo Finish Minimize Pores Primer to my nose, around my nose, chin & forehead. I've found this product to be a game changer as I used to use so much powder.
Once you apply this Primer you don't actually need powder as it stops shine!
If you do get a bit shiny later just dot some more primer on.
I find I barely need much foundation either, although I do like to apply a bit.

The best foundation for oily skin is Clinique Even Better Clinical Foundation.

Powder will just mix with the oil. If your face keeps getting oily through the day then you need remove the oil rather than powdering it. A light pressing of toilet roll works great or of course blotting papers
