Stop dyeing hair brown?

When is the right time to stop dyeing? I have what was dark brown hair but is now actually rather grey. I’ve always had dark brown hair but the roots show so fast now. I need a change but I can’t quite imagine how I will look. Any advice?

I say stop dyeing but I may mean change to dyeing a lighter colour?! 🤔

I got the hairdresser to strip the brown dye out and so now it is white. I won’t go back to dyeing it because that was too much of a pain in the arse and now I am free. You could do highlights if you don’t want to go the whole hog?

I stopped dying mine black as the roots showed so quickly, so now have balayage so lighter ends, highlights etc and a lighter brown at the roots, which doesn’t show the grey so much.

I’m in the same boat. I had naturally very dark brown hair which is now very white/grey. It grows back so quickly I have to dye it every 3-4 weeks. Not ready to be grey at 36 so have wondered about going blonde.

PickledWilly · 22/06/2022 20:15

Me too! I have an appointment next Tuesday for highlights to blend the grey into the brown in order to hopefully make it less noticeable

Senseofsomething · 22/06/2022 20:17

@SilverPeacock interesting… I know so little about hair I didn’t know hairdressers could do that! Did you get many comments from people?

I am mid 40s so a little older than you at 36, @Gensola. However I still relate to the reluctance to go grey grey! And thanks @RoyKentsChestHair also an idea to consider.

This is useful already.

My friend had brown hair with a lot of grey, she had to do the roots every week or so. She’s had it dyed blond, well really she had really a lot of blond highlights. She’s let the grey grow and it looks fantastic. She’s since used a bit of hair lightener a bit like the the old fashioned Sun In on her roots. It looks amazing.

SilverPeacock · 22/06/2022 20:30

It had to be done over couple of visits so was pricey like 175 or something like that. I have had positive comments that it is a nice colour. I have naturally quite thick hair and it is in much better condition now

Senseofsomething · 22/06/2022 21:49

@OompaLoompaa Thank you. That’s encouraging!

and @SilverPeacock that is a lot but it’s obviously a fairly long process requiring some expertise!

@PickledWilly hope it goes well! Let me know how it goes. I’m getting more and more decided to do the same. It’s bonkers to keep dyeing hair every 3 weeks.

Perfect chance for a restyle 🥰
I would recommend, as others have said, get your hair colour stripped by a hairdresser and have a chat with them to see what colours they recommend for you! Could be exciting!
I'd love to see what you end up with 😀

If your budget is limited, you can continue to do it at home, but start going lighter until your whole head is uniformly grey/white.

You can buy the same colour and developer as any hairdresser in Salon Services, which will save you money. You can start adding a lighter shade of brown, then keep going lighter when you're ready.

Thestoppedfan · 23/06/2022 07:55

I’m in the same position I just have so many greys! I’m 30 so not ready to fully embrace them yet but was thinking of having highlights out in to hide them a bit.

@Senseofsomething my sister is naturally mid brown haired and started going grey years ago, dyed her hair brown or even black for years herself.
She's 43 now and the grey has overwhelmed her so she went to my salon.
She wanted to still get rid of the grey as she's single and looking for a man! And doesn't like the grey.

So the colourist recommended trying blonde balayage at first which looked amazing.
Then a full head of highlights / tint which is what I think she has now.
The blonde blends with the natural brown that is left. She has a naturally olive skin tone & dark brown eyes which contrasts well with the blonde... she looks really pretty.
The only thing is that her hair is very curly so she has to ensure it gets enough moisture.

Myself, I'm 45, naturally a mousy blonde with some white hairs and a white patch which I hate.
So I get blonde highlights which really suit me. They're overdue now as I've got covid!
