Viscose material shrinking

Has anyone else had this? I bought a lovely loose sleeveless long top from Yours. So cool when the temps hit 30 + degrees. I've washed it as per instructions just put it on and it's definitely shrunk. I've got a large bust and it's snug at the front and back now. Think I'm going to return it. Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

Yes, unfortunately. I find the crinkly type of viscose the worst. Had the same with some summer trousers from Fat Face (annoying because I really liked them!)

Giggorata · 22/06/2022 08:20

Some types of viscose need to be ironed to re stretch. Ghost used to recommend this for their clothes after washing.
But I have had other viscose clothes, eg from Wallis, where this doesn't happen at all.
Sorry, probably not helpful if you've already tried the ironing bit.

Have you tried steaming it as that relaxes the fibres. I usually find it better to wash viscose with non biological detergent

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 22/06/2022 09:03

Ha. I bought some M&S crinkly viscose wide flappy trousers yesterday from charity shop. They are now hanging on the line and are definitely looking less wide and flappy. I was just having a poke at them wondering what to do…

I second ironing. Game changer. I was pretty pissed off that a French Connection dress was pulling across the bust after I washed it for the first time, but steam ironing has restored it back to normal. Iron on the reverse though to prevent any marks. Good luck!

I hate viscose as a fabric and very rarely will buy clothing made of it.

Mumsnut · 22/06/2022 09:15

Ditto!

I bought a lovely viscose dress last week and was going to take it to be shortened but it's shrunk in the wash enough that I am not going to bother! I usually avoid viscose for exactly this reason. I didn't know about ironing though. It's a right pita.

About to iron my new were collottes-now trousers. Will update…

Anytimeiseeit · 22/06/2022 17:58

I have loads and loads of viscose items that have never shrunk, I generally love it as a fabric. However I’ve recently had a viscose dress from nobody’s child that shrunk terribly

whimsicalwillow · 22/06/2022 20:05

Ah I didn't know about ironing it. I thought I could get away with not ironing but if this helps I'll give it a go.
Thanks all!

I find reshaping with a little bit of stretching before hanging to dry generally means you can get away with not ironing and it finds its original dimensions.

My culottes/ trousers were restored to their former wide flappy glory with a good iron. 🙂 I wore them today - very comfy and perfect for this heat ❤️

Excellent news!! I feel as though this piece of information should be on the national curriculum. So many clothes saved if people knew 😂

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 23/06/2022 20:17

Yes! I found this site: https://www.yolke.co.uk/pages/how-to-wash-viscose-without-shrinking-your-clothes which has some useful instructions on it - I did as they said on a new viscose dress (so washed cold, in hand wash liquid, in the sink, with no agitation and as little handling as I could manage, and then drip-drying) and it's remained the same size as it was, which is a win!

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/06/2022 20:20

Viscose needs to be ironed, it's a natural fabric and always shrinks. Spray the fabric with water and use a fairly high heat. It'll be as good as new.

Anytimeiseeit · 23/06/2022 21:25

I’m afraid I did iron my dress that shrunk but it couldn’t be brought back.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2022 22:03

Definitely iron

I'd return it. Viscose should easily be brought back with an iron. Get onto their customer services

It's annoying, I have a viscose dress but I hand wash it each time to prevent it shrinking.
